BBC SPORT | Football | My Club | N | Newcastle | Newcastle reveal new stadium name

Mike ashley what a fucking cock bag.

Newcastle United have announced their stadium will be known as the sportsdirect.com @ St James' Park Stadium for the immediate future.

The news comes after an announcement from owner Mike Ashley that the stadium sponsorship rights were up for offer from prospective businesses.

Managing director Derek Llambias told BBC Newcastle: "We will showcase Sports Direct until the end of the season.

"I'm sure we're going to get a sponsor in for next season."

Ashley angered supporters of Newcastle United late last month when he announced the club's plans to rename the stadium for commercial purposes, having taken them off the market.

And Llambias admitted the club could have dealt with the announcement better, but is confident the plans are in the best interests of Newcastle United.

"We could have worded it better, and that's why we came out yesterday to explain what we're trying to achieve," he said.

"With the renaming it was always going to be whatever brand it was, at St James' Park. For the remainder of this season, we already have sportsdirect.com on the Gallowgate so we'd like to take that branding through the rest of the stadium."

He added: "The players are working very hard, they are positive and determined. They know this result is important for the club, for everyone.

"But our fans have not turned. They are clever people, they know the position the club was in when I arrived and they know what position it is in now, they know this is the only way.

"It is important for everyone to see the bigger picture, I am sure things will change in a few weeks when we have our players fit again. When we have our big players available, everything will change.

"Losing would be bad for us, bad for the club, but we will keep going. But we are not thinking that way, we are only thinking of winning." [/quoteIT]

Thing is nobody will ever, ever call it that and they get free money. Stupid them, eh?

Meanwhile we are selling players to give other players a wage increase ...

Not sure how they get free money, Sports Direct is Ashley's company.

Who still have a budget for advertising, and will presumably be paying some of it to Newcastle.

Would anyone grumble if Anfield was named Coca Cola @ Anfield and we got £100m over 5 years allowing whoever the manager is an extra £20m a season to spend on players.

No-one (other then on advertising or on TV) would ever use the sponsors name and still call it Anfield.

I can see it now

Have it your way, you got it! @ Burger King: The Whopper Stadium - Anfield

Instead of a hotdog or pie at half time, it will be a Chicken Royale meal

Knowing the Americans, they will be using the Shankly statue to endorse the venture, sticking a burger in his hand

they'd have an animatronic Shankly on the forecourt if there was cash in it

Changing the name of a current ground would sting.

If and when we move, it wont be Anfield so they can call it what they want.

I'd refer to it as New Anfield probably.

As for Arsenal's they do call it the Emirates but i've heard it reffered to as Ashburton Grove as well.

Guest Dog Chaser

Naming rights for grounds give clubs considerable revenue. Even if we sold naming rights for our ground or even the new ground, whats to stop all of us still calling it Anfield.

I think we need to take a broader perspective on this.

For years people have been saying how far behind filth and the likes our income is. But even if anyone did re name Anfield (and I dont think it is on the cards and is only a consideration for the new ground should it ever get built), the fans would always call it Anfield.

We cant whinge about not having enough money if we aren't going to accept some things have to change with the times to maximise income.

Everyone calls Arsenals ground the Emirates don't they?

I think these names will stick.

I still find myself calling it Highbury from time to time.

And I constantly call Man City's new ground Maine Road.

    • It was the gimp, I think.
    • They’re really milking this deal.
    • I know there’s no time for two club cunts on here but Sporting just need 4 points to clinch the Premeira. Three years ago they were known as the worst run club in world football, when their president paid supporters to attack players at the training ground. Just goes to show anything is possible and you are never as far away as you think. All done on a shoestring budget, with a rookie manager and a bunch of punk kids. Big Seb Coates finally came good.
    • The irony is that almost every other club would kill to be in the position that City and Chelsea are in.
Everton would be top of that list, yet proudly spout about how they “called out” the breakaway six and spoke for every other club when they called for sanctions against them. The purpose of those sanctions were to allow themselves to be bumped into a position where they could “qualify” for a European place that they hadn’t actually earned as much as anything else and to claim differently is basically a lie.
West Ham, Brighton and Crystal Palace, with rent-a-quote chairman Steve Parrish, again pontificating about how these teams should be brought to book, yet wanting to null and void last season to protect themselves against possible relegation whilst saying it was morally wrong to play on given lives were being lost. They refuse to see that in applauding City and Chelsea for breaking away, and back into the Premier League, all that is guaranteeing is they strengthen those clubs with Oligarchs or Oil States as owners to continue dominating every competition they are in, effectively taking the competitiveness away from those very same competitions!
The ESL wasn’t handled very well in its timing or proposed implementation, but the general idea that it would possibly limit the massive money teams and allow others to challenge them was a sound one, but the blinkers were on from the time the announcement was made and the “little 14”, as opposed to the “big 6”, basically decided to hold onto what they had rather than what they might have had. It won’t go away though and they must know that, even if the current voting regulations in the Premier League give them the whip hand, and effectively a veto, for anything the top teams might want to bring in. A quick look at who has won the major prizes in European competition and domestic leagues over the past few seasons will show them why the current system needs changes to be made. They’re all hypocrites though, and will bury their collective heads in the sand while the really big boys dry bum them.
