When Pennant signed Tomkins wrote a long article (stating the obvious I know) about how great he would be and how perfectly he would fit into our team.

Pennant: Paying the Penance

Had to smile at the 'twice the fee doesn't mean twice the player' reference, comparing Pennant with Alves.

And he's right too; sometimes twice the fee can mean being at least 10 times the player.

Perversely I admire the will, the sheer bollocks involved in never deviating from his path. You see the Rafa camps on here thrown in the odd "of course he's made mistakes" or "of course he's done some very good things" in that slightly smarmy used-car-salesman "you can trust me ;)" sort of way.

No such crap from Tomkins. Absolutely, utterly convinced of his rightness, he sees no need for such trickery and just says here it is. He can't be oblivious to the things people say about him, but there hasn't been one second of detour, u-turn or doubt.

And when Rafa gets the push he'll be exactly the same with whoever comes in!

Part scary, part laughable, part frustrating - but I have to say part laudable too.

Someone once said something like this: "Follow the man who seeks the truth and stay away from the one who is certain he has found it."

People who are always sure they're right are by and large either idiots or twisted fanatics. I guess Tomkins is - mainly - in the last bracket.

That line could apply to Shankly - or Thatcher.

Paul's just offering his opinion. He's not asking for "followers". It's not like he's started his own website and called it something monstrously egotistical is it?

Erm......

I dunno lad, this Tomkins thing you got going on here....... It's odd.
