I saw Robert Smith in a hotel bar in London once.

That’s all there is to that particular story.

I’ve got. Worse one.

I went to a tailor in Brighton about 15 years ago to buy a fancy shirt for a wedding

when I chose the one I wanted m the assistant told me that Paul Weller bought the same one in here last week.

Were you in a Next looking at Ben Sherman shirts? And was the "tailor" was in fact a 17-year-old sixth former on his weekend job?

I’m not taking fashion sass from a Salopian.

You can have that shirt if you want? It’s only 10 years old, so I’m sure it’s bang in style round yours now.

Like the new record a lot.

Pretty rare that acts who have been around for 40 years plus or so and where obviously their best is behind them can still produce stuff that genuinely stands up.

The more I listen to it, the more I think it’s one of the best things they’ve ever done and I don’t think it’s any coincidence that it also happens to be the shortest album they’ve put out in a long time. Faith and Pornography also have 8 songs a piece; I don’t think either would benefit from having more songs wedged in, and nor would this.

I hope Songs Of A Lost World is not portentous in anything like the same way, but Blackstar with 7 songs had fewer than any David Bowie album bar Station to Station (6) and I wouldn’t be inclined to argue with anyone who thought it was his best since then (personally, I find it hard to split Station to Station and Low)…

I suspect that The Cure have caught lightning in a bottle and the other new album(s), when they see the light of day, will be comparatively uneven, but this one is remarkable.

Shortest in terms of number of songs but the running time is over 49 mins which is slightly longer than the average album, but i know what you mean - it is lean in terms of number of songs and therefore no filler and yeah shorter in number of songs and running time too than their post Disintegration albums.

Probably a lot to do with its long, long gestation period.

Smith reckons there is another record, but then he said this one was coming for years.

It is a gem of a record though - one i am surprised they still have in them this late in the day.

This is i feel a genuine late career gem. It is gorgeous, and there is a bruised beauty and dignity to it that is captivating.

Superb show last night too.

Oh yeah, I should have specified that I meant primarily in terms of the number of songs - although Bloodflowers only has one more, it doesn’t feel anywhere near as concise. I think in terms of length-by-time, this one is the shortest post The Head on the Door.
