Weller has about 5 songs maybe that I really like and the rest could possibly be the most boring versions of noise I've ever heard in my life.  Theres a version of music I think of as non songs, where the song evokes absolutely nothing in you because it offers nothing. I think Wellers career is about 95 percent of that. Plus anybody I see with his haircut like an electrician who comes round to do a job I feel like laughing in their face you fucking gimboid!

Weller or The Jam? The Jam were tremendous and iconic. The Style Council and his solo career are largely for the fans. Still a few stonking tunes in there though.

As Sir Roger said 'Cobblers.'

I'm just on about Wellers stuff on his own. I liked songs like Wild wood, broken stones, you do something to me but the the rest of it was a case of skip... skip... skip. It's personal taste. I lf it was a Welller thread I wouldn't even look in, a bit like the Nick Cave one I think he's shite but I don't go I there just to say it ,it's fuck all to do with me what others like.

Opinions eh? Weller made no secret of being a big fan of Marriott anyhow.

Personally I can separate the man from the music even though I have no idea what Weller is actually like.

I'm talking about his music. I couldn't care less what he's like as a person although my mate supported him on tour and said he was really nice FWIW.

All that mod revival stuff in the late 70s was awful.

Just on The Cure, they must make a fortune from streaming now. All the student kids seem to love them & I hear their songs all the time in the pub.

I'm struggling to think of a band I hear more when I'm out.

Not a bad thing.

My 18yo loves them, he plays a lot of their songs on guitar.

Millions of others thought differently,fortunately.

Of course it’s all about opinions. I love Weller and have done since The Jam. Love TSC. Love his solo work. With some exceptions of course as he’s written about 30 albums, he’s been consistently boss. Could just play stadiums but chooses not to most of the time and is fucking great live. Treats his band and crew and supports acts well, nice fella, some bad haircuts and great clobber.
The Cure, I like some of their tunes but the albums have mostly left me uninterested. This new one should lop off the first 3 minutes.

Both are/were excellent and they don't have to be mutually exclusive in your tastes. The Jam were fantastic and The Cure had their moments and also their non moments too. There is no definitive best but both bands were great, although The Cure were a sort of outsiders band during their heyday and not necessarily one for the 'cool' kids.

The Cure are ten million times 'cooler' than The Jam have ever been, precisely because they never gave the slightest fuck about being cool. And made music with feeling.

The Jam are for tories. That's entertainment?

Weller performed for striking miners during their strike and was one of a few Southerners who actually seemed to call out the Tory government of the time. Doesn't sound like Tory behaviour to me either.

Charlotte Sometimes is one of my favourite ever singles, as are Primary and A Forest.

Pornography and Disintegration are probably my favourite Cure albums.

I've listened to the new single twice so far.

Had this been 1988, chances are I would've taped it off the radio on my double cassette Hitachi machine and passed it on to mates for discussion at school.

So far, after two listens, it's a disappointment.

Probably says more about me than The Cure mind.

The new single would've found a place neatly on the Kiss Me album. But only as an album filler.

You can't be serious, Chris?

You're not being serious.

The lyrics to That's Entertainment are a great place to start.  Tories would hate them.

Anyway, I love The Cure and I love The Jam.  But I really love The Cure.  I know it's later Cure, but Disintegration is outstanding.

As Kyle Broflovski once said, Disintegration is the best album ever.
