Birds (the animals)

Just saw something amazing. Out my back door loads of black birds began flying and landing on the roofs of houses across the garden. Thye kept on coming until there were literally hundreds of them across about a dozen roofs. It was incredible. I've never seen anything like it. Then from nowhere, as one, they all lifted off the roofs and began flying in formation. They were weaving across the sky for a few minutes before I couldn't see them anymore. I've seen birds doing that before but never the number that there was there.

Amazing.

I think you might be right about them being starlings although the first picture you posted kinda stole my thunder :D It really was something else. They just kept coming. It was like something from the film Birds. There must have been between 200 and 300 of them. They all took off at the same time and all the birds from one roof flew in formation with each other to begin with, so there were about 6 different formations flying around each other, and they each joined on to the next until it was one big one. Stunning stuff.

Really active in the back of mine now, all kinds of birds nest building, calling for mates. Especially happy to see Greenfinches and Goldfinches in my garden with the added bonus of a pair of great tits(the featherd kind), nesting in my garden nesting box.

My favourite time of year, is spring.

I have one disclaimer to loving birds - I can't be doing with magpies and crows, and I shoot them, they're skyrats that have become far to common and feed on song birds eggs and chicks, so they're on the agenda.

There’s a Robin that regularly visits our garden. I think it may actually be my late Dad so I enjoy our conversations while he’s here.

Of course I am aware he might not actually be my Dad but still...

Is that an Irish thing? My Mrs says the same thing about her dad.

There needs to be a cull of them round here, they're everywhere.

We saw two of them harassing a hedgehog the other day.

Merciless little bastards.

Must've counted about 20 different species of bird visit our garden at one point or another - including a sparrowhawk that chased a wood pigeon through the bushes at the back.

We had great drama a couple of weeks ago watching a sparrow hawk bring down a pigeon and tear off the bits it wanted before leaving the rest of it. Next morning the only remaining evidence were a few feathers

FAO @Champ

Sparrowhawks - Beautiful apex predators

Magpies - Hoodies of the hedgrow, noisy twats on my roof

I’m only looking to justify my own prejudices. So you think they’re acceptable and not a bit speciesist?

We hate seagulls too. Is that ok?

I’ve never seen a live hedgehog.
Did anyone else watch that Chris Packham programme the other night about the survey of the wildlife in a suburban street, which included a hedgehog in one of the gardens? It was a repeat, in fact I think I’m repeating myself here but it was really fascinating
