Vilma suspended for the season. Wow.

Fujita gets 3 game,s Hargrove 8 games, Will Smith four games. NFL announced.

Vilma's suspension starts immediately, the others can participate in OTAs and preseason, then begin serving. I expect all to appeal

Jonathan Vilma banned for year

The NFL suspended four players for their roles in the New Orleans Saints' bounty system, including linebacker Jonathan Vilma for the entire 2012 season.

In addition to Vilma, defensive tackle Anthony Hargrove was suspended eight games, defensive Will Smith four games and linebacker Scott Fujita (now with the Cleveland Browns) three games.

A league investigation found that from 2009-11 New Orleans coaches and players put together a bounty system that paid out improper cash bonuses for hits aimed at knocking opposing players out of games. The NFL says as many as 27 Saints participated.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell already has suspended Saints coach Sean Payton for the 2012 season and fined the team $500,000. Saints former defensive coordinator Gregg Williams is suspended indefinitely, New Orleans general manager Mickey Loomis begins an eight-game ban after the preseason, and interim coach Joe Vitt begins serves his six-game suspension at the same time.

Payton's suspension began April 16 and runs through the Super Bowl, which, incidentally, is in New Orleans. During that time, Payton may not even have casual, non-football conversations with anyone on any NFL team without at least notifying the league office.

8th player from the 94 Chargers to die before 45 apparently, wonder what part head trauma has played in this. Didn't a player shoot himself in the chest a year or so ago so he could donate his brain to research?

Dave Duerson of the 85 Bears, there was an article in the Guardian I posted here last year about it, it was really interesting.

Found it:

It's a good read.

  • 2 weeks later...

The Giants' wide-receiving corps suffered a big blow on Thursday when Hakeem Nicks reportedly went down with a fractured right foot.

According to Michael Eisen of Giants.com, the wideout fractured the fifth metatarsal of his right foot early during New York's second OTA workout. He was running a route during individual drills.

Nicks, a third-year wideout, will have a screw inserted into the bone on Thursday by Dr. Robert Anderson, a foot and ankle specialist based in Charlotte, N.C. He should be fully recovered within 12 weeks, which puts him in line to be 100 percent healthy in time for the season opener at home against the Dallas Cowboys on Sept. 5.

Mandatory minicamp will go from June 12-14, so Nicks will likely be unable to participate. He'll also likely miss all nine OTAs prior to the start of minicamp. If he requires the full 12 weeks to recuperate, it is entirely possible he may miss training camp and all four preseason games.

What It Means

The Giants lose their second-leading receiver just a couple of months after losing another of their top-four receivers, Mario Manningham, to free agency. Last season, Nicks registered 76 receptions for 1,192 yards and seven touchdowns, which tied him with running back Brandon Jacobs (also lost to free agency) for third on the team.

For the Giants, losing one of their top sources of offense is obviously a blow, especially on a wide-receiving unit that's growing thinner by the day. But at least the recovery time is short, and he'll be ready to go once the games truly matter.

What Comes Next

At least Nicks won't be missing during any of the actual NFL season, though his preparation for 2012 will certainly be affected. Coming back in time for training camp would be ideal, but if he takes a little longer than that, so be it.

The situation could be worse, and at least Nicks is young enough to be able to heal and rebound quickly. The worst thing the team could do is rush him back and have him re-aggravate the injury in the preseason.

Lawrence Taylor was told his Super Bowl ring was bought by Charlie Sheen

By Chris Chase | Shutdown Corner – 20 hours ago

(Getty Images)Lawrence Taylor's Super Bowl ring will hardly know it switched owners.

According to Jay Glazer, the Hall of Fame linebacker was told that a fellow aficionado of all things illicit, Charlie Sheen, was the buyer of his Super Bowl XXV ring that recently sold for more than $230,000 at auction. It's not known whether Taylor's information is accurate but, man, we hope it is.

Taylor's agent, Mark Lepster, confirmed to Glazer that LT was told Sheen bought the ring. They are still trying to confirm this poetic purchase. It's like Phil Spector buying O.J.'s Heisman.

The actor has an extensive sports memorabilia collection that includes Babe Ruth's 1927 World Series ring and the contract that sold the baseball great from the Boston Red Sox to the New York Yankees. He also owned the infamous Bill Buckner ball.

Taylor's son, TJ, put the ring up for auction unbeknownst to his father. The troubled former star said he had no problem with the decision.

Dolphins will star in Hard Knicks this year.

Really scraping the barrel.

Nobody wanted to do it after the league supposedly used a documentary filmed in the Saints locker room to charge them with the bounty issues.I don't think we will get as much behind the scenes stuff for a while.

Not good news for the Saints,we are going to have to shed some serious cap room next year to give Graham a similar contract.

Cant see how we can keep him other than with the tag next season.

Its my main issue with having so much money tied to Brees,he takes up close to 20% of teh cap on his own.
