Working from home

Does anybody here work from home instead of at the office? I could easily work from a spare bedroom and would actually have a lot more room and more resources available from doing so.

Does anyone who does work from home have any hints I can drop to the boss about the benefits of letting me lie in till 8.55am and watching trashy daytime TV while I work?

Don't do it. You lose out on the social side of things that you get at work.

Unless you're a Billy No Mates at work... then go for it.

The other thing is that it becomes hard to deliniate between work time and home time and depending on your responsibilites at work, there's a danger of using more and more personal time to get work stuff done.

Of course you can end up saving a couple of hours every day just in commuting time, but do you really want to spend that time working instead of sleeping on the bus/train or sitting in traffic?

I work at home most of the time, but I have regular meetings, and sometimes whole days/weeks/months on client sites. It works for me because I work down the end of the garden (no, not gnome alone), so it feels like a very short commute - and I make sure I meet up with friends for lunch as often as possible.

Don't start watching Loose Women, or Deal or No Deal. Hell lies there.

just do some work unsolicited over a few evenings or a weekend if possible, show him the results, and he'd be foolish not to give it a go

I've done it for 5 years now, there's great benefits but you may miss the daily interaction like I do.

Also if you have a wife/gf that you live with it can cause problems, in my case because I was at home all day the expectation was that I had all this free time and should take care of the housework while she was at work. I did have a lot of free time but I thought it should have been shared equally regardless of the fact that I'm sat at home in boxer shorts doing a bit of work and browsing youporn/tlw...needless to say we're no longer together.

To answer your question and tips on selling it to your boss, the only thing they'll be interested in is increased productivity. Whether that comes from more hours worked or from you being more available outside of normal office hours..

you could always fake swine flu but tell him you will work from home whilst ill, work like a bitch and he might make it permanent.

Seriously wouldn't recommend it. I did it for about 8 months and home started to feel like a prison that I was, err, imprisoned in for 40 hours a week.

The other thing is that you'll start getting out of bed 5 minutes before your shift is supposed to start, or 20 minutes after in my case. I know that sounds great but when you've been working all day in your shorts and home time strikes, you'll soon discover that you can't actually be arsed getting a shower and getting ready at 6PM to go shopping or the gym or anything else you might do during a normal week so the whole imprisonment thing gets that bit more, er, imprisoning.

Working from home isn't for the feeble. You end up getting into bad habits and letting yourself fall apart like a homo.

Make sure that you have a dedicated office environment to work in. Don't work in your underpants, but actually go to the trouble of "dressing for work" and set aside time to do something active. I usually do a session or two cycling indoors or out.

It's also a good idea to set aside one day a week to actually travel into work so that you don't lose touch with your co-workies and keep in the loop.

In an old job, they asked me to develop an excel and access based database. I said I'd be better off doing it at home and took three days off to do it. But instead I phoned some bird I'd worked with at another job, and got her to email the system they used, I tweaked it a bit and it took me about an hour. So I had three days holiday basically. The only things I've ever been really good at are cheating and cutting corners. I should probably be a criminal, but I can't be arsed.

I now work from home and it's better than I ever imagined.

Not having to commute and waste an hour or two a day is great. I feel far less social though and I don't think it's that great for some peoples mental health. Ask me at 8am would I rather work from home or not then home every single day. Ask me at 1 in the afternoon and I'm 50/50.

I’m not built for working from home.

I severely lack the commitment/dedication/application to even pretend to do a half arsed days work.

Our old office had to close for a week due to a covid outbreak and we all had to work from home for a week.

I reckon it’s not an exaggeration to say I reckon I did less than 2 hours work in total the entire week.

And was drinking by dinner time most days.

I was the exact opposite, worked like a twat. Decent cracking one off time too.

One of my best mates and his work mates used to have an 11am zoom and all thought it would be funny having a beer everyday on it. He got to the point where he was hiding cans from his wife at 9am. Asleep at 5 as soon as he finished then wide awake at 3am sweating. For months and months. It's good for some. I'd like 2 days in 3 days at home personally but our office is in Epsom so I'm fucked.

Oh.

Looks like I've got it wrong for about 37 years now.

Is that not OK?

PS.  I worked my twat off from home at the beginning of covid... while trying to "home school" my kids as well... my reward was being sacked, while the 25yo's were kept on and got paid to watch Netflix.

Long live the lunchtime wine, I reckon.
