You've got your hands full w China now.

Yeah have seen the Hong Kong stuff regularly, up against what we're supposed to believe is Communism so they're fine with that one. Paul Joseph Watson even flew over there himself for that a while back. I suppose in reality they are actually up against a right wing government no matter what they make it out as.

Wouldn’t say Chile had a particularly left leaning government at the moment, although it has had for most of the time since the return of democracy. Their current president is one of the richest people in the country, a right wing, Harvard educated billionaire - so that should tell you something.

I don't use the BBC's trash tip of a news site so didn't know that, thanks.

I think if you're going to ask "Where's the huge concern for Chile from the media" then it's generally a good idea to check the actual media first.

I don't have to check state-backed propaganda outlets to know that there hasn't been enough coverage of Chile recently compared to what there would've been if it was a socialist gov in power.

Is there any difference in the US Latin American policy before and after 1990? it seems that a lot of went on after the Cold War wouldn't have been allowed during it, and would Chinese increasing economic involvement bring about a return to sterner US policy in the region?

Im half way through Banco (The sequel to Pappilon) and he moves from Caracas to Maracaibo. Even then (1948) he comments on all the Oil Refineries going up and American firms running them. Should be a super rich country. Its poor as fuck. Why? Because Americans are greedy cunts.

I must have read Paplllon a good 7/8 times. Best book ever. Have you read Banco before?

Yes mate a couple of times. Read Papillon first when I was 17, and Banco about 10 years ago. Both are up there my favourite books ever. Downloaded them both to my kindle yesterday so stuck into Papillon now.

I think the US military and intelligence services had their hands full in Iraq and Afghanistan for a few years, reducing their ability to prevent democracy in places like Nicaragua, Venezuela, Brazil, Ecuador and Bolivia.

Looks like normal service is being resumed.

Have been without internet for the past few days but just wanted to tell you all that my mother was eventually evacuated by the organisation she works for. She is lucky enough to have dual citizenship so she was able to get out, she's really worried for the coworkers she left behind.

Poor, poor Bolivia. The country just can't catch a break. Right as you celebrate getting rid of a corrupt, incompetent Chavez wannabe, we replace him with a violent, crazed Pinochet wannabe.

I mean, what is going on? Why can we not just have a normal, decent person in power?

Desperately praying for elections to be scheduled in the very near future and for the voters to heartily reject both of these nutjobs and to bring someone in who will put the needs of the people first. I'm not holding my breath.
