It's because of the amount of influence he's built up and through that the power that he wields. You need to remember that he's pretty much the only constant in the PL, he's been at MU for so long that he's seen TV companies, journalists, PFA and FA heads come and go.

 

That's allowed him to ingratiate himself with enough influential people within the game that he can afford to ignore the rest. They're not scared of him exactly, more of getting on the wrong side of him and what that can mean for their careers. It's wrong but that's how it is.
