I agree with you there. For anyone to think that he is better than Alonso is beyond me really. He's a good player but has no where near the range of passing that Alonso has. Better at going forward though.

He's a fantastic footballer and our CM options would be all the better for having him as an option. He'd give us the option of playing a more direct game without having to move Gerrard out of the final 3rd.

 

That could be the difference in certain games and against park the bus teams you've got to think a CM with Barry in it is going to be more fluid and create more chances than a Mascher/Xabi combo. The fact that he can cover pretty much every position on the left as well is just a bonus.

That was a masterclass from Xabi today. He controls the pace of the game so well and sets the tempo. Imperious passing. Quality tackling and puts pressure on the opposition midfield as often as possible. Two assists today too! I think we'd all take Barry, but not if its at Xabi's expense. Surely Rafa must see that. Would be a quality addition to the squad who could cover the entire left side and compete in central midfield with Mascherano & Alonso - would gladly sacrifice Lucas and Dossena in order to balance the books. 8M would be a steal when you look at the valuation of players like Carrick AND Hargreaves - two players who he ahead of in the England pecking order.

Agree completely. Barry would strengthen us considerably, especially in those games where Mascherano isn't needed.

Barry is an excellent footballer, but he isn't at the level of Alonso, Gerrard and The Chief as you could see today. It also doesn't help that his partner was the laughable Stylian Petrov.

 

However, just because he's a good player doesn't mean we need to sign him. Not required.
