Everybody can have an opinion. Are all opinions equal?

No they fucking aren't!

But you seem to have a problem with an actor/comedian/fighter hosting a programme in which he interviews an academic with direct experience of the issue. Your reason for not listening is lack of time. Much easier to dismiss it.

Lots of people on here respect Rogan of course. Don't have to agree with him on everything of course.

Interesting slant on it.

Have a listen to the Joe Rogan podcast mentioned on the podcast thread for another view.

Then read the 'alt right radicalised me' article from the Guardian.

This one?

Nearly 3 hours?  Fuck that.

I've started listening to people discussing the thinking (or lack of) behind the fact that a tiny minority of people who nobody ever meets may or may not want to change the use of pronouns.  Is that worth talking about?  It seems to reinforce a line from the Guardian article

These pieces committed many of the same fallacies that their predecessors from the 1990s had. They cherry-picked anecdotes and caricatured the subjects of their criticism.

They also seem to equate all Marxism with the worst excesses of Stalinism.  That's either stupid or dishonest (or maybe both).  They seem to assume that Marxists are either ignorant or evil and (although they didn't use the C word in the 15 minutes I listened to) the only logical, natural way to human progress is Capitalism ("the reason anyone strives to better themselves... is to produce inequality.  You're trying to rise above the mediocre masses every time you make an effort at anything.")

Fifteen minutes I'll never get back.  I'll pass on the remaining two and a half hours.

I know fuck all about Joe Rogan, but my first thought when I saw that "academic versus this" post was "that's playing the man, not the ball".

Absolutely an ad hominem attack there, no question. Below the belt and all. Sucker punch. etc etc (Dude is involved with UFC)

TBH I haven't listened to a lot of his stuff, hardly anything in fact. A friend sent me a 5 minute vid where Rog talks about the gender wage gap which was very instructive as to how he forms his opinions (from a position with no knowledge in the subject matter, i. e. basic sociological and social psychological principles in this instance, but instead relying heavily on own experiences/anecdotal evidence) and how he presents them with bravado and mixes in faux or pseudo ITK language ("You know, when you really look into it...").

Of course this doesn't mean that nobody should listen to his stuff, should not find him entertaining or that everything he says is wrong.

Oh well, never mind.

Of course they were discussing an actual change in the law. The law. But hey ho.

Funny you should mention the pay gap - someone on here recommended the podcasts Freakonomics and Stuff you should know - I listened to the Stuff you should know whilst mowing the lawn today. Have a listen.

They weren't at all clear which law - I wasn't even certain which country they were talking about - or what the law really meant (they were giving their heavily slanted interpretation of the bits they disagreed with) or how it would be enforced ... or anything useful and factual, really.  They moved on from that after a couple of minutes, so I find it hard to get my knickers in a twist about whatever it was.

Some of the Freakonomics titles seem interesting so this is way more likely. But really, there is so much really, really interesting stuff on my shelf already that I seemingly never get to.

Thought as much.

Wait I don't even understand.

So because I watched a five minute vid where the "wage gap" is mentioned, your train of thought is then "Wage eh? That's economics innit!" And because some fella on the interwebs recommended you these podcasts about economy like literally 12 hours ago I am now suddenly in a position where I have to justify why I don't listen to hours worth of podcasts posthaste whilst mowing the lawn?

Funny how the right always seem to criticise the left without reading anything about it. I've had the displeasure of reading right-wing nonsense (Ayn Rand etc.) and it's complete, fantasist drivel.

Joe Rogan is right wing?

Forgot, everyone is right wing to you. Like when you are at the North Pole and every direction is South.

Oh.

Well, there's lots of porn. And of course my collection of Night Court VHS-tapes. But mainly porn.

I do hope it is German porn? We can't be having any of that foreign muck over here.
