All time great Managers?: Daily Mail

Bob Paisley won 13 major trophies in his 9 seasons of management, Ferguson can't match that return in any 9 successive seasons he has been a manager. Throw in the only manager in history to win 3 European Cups and there is no comparison.

That's what I used to say, but now Whiskey Nose has gone on to win the Champions League again, not to mention another league title. Even the staunchest of Liverpool supporters should admit that he has been the best manager in England.

Fucking disgusting, but that's the reality these days.

Fergie and Shanks the best, and the greatest, in no particular order.

As footballing achievements, the Manc's 1999 treble, Clough's two European cups and Wenger's invincibles season are I think the best, in no particular order.

Are you on a wind up??????

Paisley stands head and shouders above the rest. No argument! Imagine what he would have achieved if he had hung around for another five years: the legacy that he left to Joe Fagan was proof positive that Sir Robert would have continued to enhance his collection of siverware. Even without such hypotheses what Paisley achieved within such a brief period of time leaves all others in his shadow!

That list is fucking shit, fucking disgraceful and should be torn apart and done again.

whoever did that is an absolutely gobshite

Usual response from somone reading something from the Daily Mail, foaming at the mouth. That's what they write their shite for.

Why is Busby above Clough?

Fersuson isn't even in the top 3 for me I'd have Clough and Paisley in there as well as either Mourinho or Kenny. Kenny has triumphed over Fergie and its a shame he didn't do the 20 years in management himself whereas Mourinho drops his kecks and curls one out on Fergies record. Maybe Fergie could go ahead of Kenny, just due his time but he cannot match Paisleys success rate. People who rate Fergie over Paisley are too short sighted losing sight of the whole picture, taking stock in life.

When all is 'said and done' is the name of which boyband's album?

No dude, IMO, I think Shanks and Fergie are the best and greatest managers.

As achievements though I think Clough's Forest to win two Euro cups back-to-back is monumental. Truly extraordinary.

You need to consider the context of each manager. Those who say Bob, Fagan and Kenny took over establishing squads and dynasties are absolutely right.

Liverpool were dogshit before Shanks took over. So were Forest. This what makes Shanks and Clough so important. Mancs were still okay, they won the FA cup with Fat Cunt Ron but essential they were mid-table shite before Fergal got the job.

What Clough did with Forest will never be done again.

Imagine a manager taking over a Championship club like Coventry City last year:

2009 - gets them promoted to EPL in first full season

2010 - is FIRST in the EPL in his first season and wins the League Cup (against, us BTW, when the League Cup actually meant something) and wins the EPL by seven points from Mancs

2010 - is runner up to Mancs in the EPL but wins the Champions League

2011 - wins the European Cup again

in between 2010 and 2011, that manager is UNDEFEATED, the equivilent of a whole season!

When Paisley, Fergie, Fagan, Kenny took over the reigns the club was established - when Shanks and Busby took over Liverpool and Man Yoo, there were average sides.

Shanks and Busby were watersheds, so was Cloughy. For want of a better phrase, you can start Liverpool's history with the date Shanks took over and the date Busby took over, same with Cloughy.

YES, these clubs had successes before then and that is not to discount the past as irrelevant BUT these clubs will never be the same again both domestically and in the world arena because of these individuals.

Wenger's invincibles is something special and only ever done by Preston in the very first Football League. The Mancs treble is important simply because its never been done before. I probably overrate it though because winning the CL is I think not as credible as winning the old European Cup.

I hate him more than any figure in all of football but it's hard to argue against Slur being the no.1 manager. His achievements with ManUre are impressive, to say the least.

No arguing with the top 5, Ferguson, Shanks, Paisely, Clough and Busby are 5 of the greatest.

While I agree that Ferguson was a great manager, he's also had financial dominance of the premiership for a long time, he's also been 'lucky' with the best crop of young players (many of them poached) this country has ever seen.

He's done brilliantly to handle their egos, but he's had a lot of ability handed to him on a plate - he's also been able to replace and augment those players with massive outlays on players for crucial positions, £10m on Stam, £30m on Rooney etc.

Paisley's Liverpool existed when pretty much everything was equal. Liverpool didn't have an all-powerful brand and marketing machine, or a peerless youth system and business model, nor was he able to steamroller the league with the kind of signings nobody else could afford.

All Paisley ever had, was himself. His eye for a player, his coaching methods, and the bootroom.

The Thong - Please don't call it the EPL or Prem' - It's the League Title, whatever the hype and always will be. Abbreviations like that are an example of why everyone of an LFC persuasion HATES the Premiership brand and all that goes with it; The very names speak of rampant commercialism and are disgusting - The best team in England wins the league title - NOT the Prem' or EPL or whatever other crap the chattering classes choose to call it.

JamesPP it was OUR fault in 1990 for not marking Pardew properly at a corner or before that not stopping Grey equalising Barne's penalty which would have took us through - Mind you at Wembley against THEM and with Fergie's luck just starting to reveal itself - who REALLY thinks that it wouldn't have all gone horribly wrong somehow?

Yes, we might have crushed them but somehow even against our last great league dominating side - I can STILL see Fergie finding a way past us somehow and then (much, much worse) spending years afterwards bragging about how HE knocked us off our perch and started our decline in person!!! Isn't what's happened bad enough. Also, why not blame the linesman in that Forest match who chalked off a perfectly good equaliser?

Incidentally on the thread subject - Paisley without question;

I've argued over this with Mancs 'til the cows come home and even (shock) managed to convince them that I was right!!

How? Simple - I said whatever Fergie's done (or does) and he's done many things - some to be proud of, many to not; He will NEVER dominate at home and in Europe CONSECUTIVELY for as long or as thoroughly as Paisley did and win in the same period (9 years) the same number of honours Paisley did both at home and abroad.

Moreover, he has never (and will never now, not with only 2 to 3 seasons left at most) evolved a whole new 'house' football style for his club that combines the attributes of the best sides in England AND Europe (ie passion and possession; spirit and passing etc) as Paisley did as a member of our backroom staff for about 4 years after we lost to Red Star Belgrade in 1974 nor will he be an integral part of the previous managers success as Bob Paisley was for Bill Shankley for another 19 or so years before that and in doing so help raise said club from the status of say, Norwich City, Blackburn or West Ham (as we were when Shanks began with us) to THE best side in Europe bar none which we were unquestionably on Bobs retirement.

EVERYTHING Fergies done has been driven by and sustained by money and or the assistence of others - A string of men who made fine assistants and/or gave him the tactical knowledge he lacked in certain areas to win in those areas/competitions (i.e. Mclaren, Quieroz, Kidd and Knox etc), ready made teams bought to order (Ferdinand, Tevez, Berbatov, Carrick, Hargreaves, Yorke, Cole, Cristiano Ronaldo, Kanchelskis, Vidic, Evra, Bruce, Pallister, Ince, Keane, Cantona, Dublin, Sheringham, Veron, Solksjaer, Heinze, Van Der Sar, Schmeichel, Bosnich, Irwin, Sharpe, Park, Rooney and Saha have ALL played major parts for United since 1992 onwards and were ALL bought either to stop others having them or because they played well against United - Saha, Cantona and Ronaldo are PRIME examples of this);

On top of this, of course there's Fergie's well known hairdryer and anger treatment whereby he bullies the FA, Referees, the media and anyone else who might make United's life enormously difficult (and all of whom did up until the end of season 1991/1992 but NOT afterwards, wonder why? Funny that) in order to nullify any action from them by scaring them into not acting and the natural 'favoritism' that United enjoy due to their size and influence anyway - with all that stacked against potential challengers (and I mean long-term challengers the likes of which they haven't had since the days of Dalglish with us over decades NOT the odd 4 year period or so), is it any wonder no REALLY long term rival dynasty has appeared since 1993? OR that Ferguson's done so well? Indeed, he'd have to have been a total moron not to have won and but for his total ineptness in Europe for much of that time, they could have won a lot more as well (be thankful for small mercies I suppose!!). I wonder how the Liverpool fans from the above mentioned semi-final v Palace at Villa Park in April 1990 who chanted "Fergie must stay" as United were engulfed in another newspaper scandal and awful league season (common back then) feel now? Not the same I'm sure.

Anyway, for Paisley to have built up an empire much like what Fergie has now but on FAR less money and with NONE of the intimidation and bullying that the whisky drinker has used - along with NO marketing machine and basically nothing but a rapier sharp football brain, a solid grasp of tactics, the 'brains trust' that was the boot room chock full of good lieutenants and future commanders and the Anfield barrage (of noise) was and is nothing short of miraculous given how long said empire endured and makes Bob the winner of ANY greatest manager ever competition hands down.

Bob Paisley stands alone in terms of what he won, the frequency with which he won it, his incomparable football knowledge and the longetivity of what he passed on to his successors. He is quite simply in a class of his own when it comes to acutal management and is clearly the best British manager of all by a long way, a VERY long way indeed.....................................

I'm fairly certain he's Momo/ScottyT because he tried to neg me for saying good riddance to ScottyT. Unfortunately for him his paltry neg power simply bounced off my rep powered force field.

Bob Paisley will always top this poll for me, winner and gent to boot. A class act as borne out by that pic of him and his mates from Hetton-le-Hole with the championship trophy and the European Cup. I grew up watching us sweep all before us and that memory will never leave me.

As for Clough, horrible man:

I'm loathe to start arguing for the cunt, but I think his achievements are numerous: the number of great teams he's built, the number of trophies won, the number of times he's won more than one big trophy in a season, the three-on-the-bounce title win(s). All of that built from a club in decline against the back drop of massive expectation - and that's without considering the style of football his teams play, his ability to handle massive egos, his ability to embrace change, his ability to delegate, his ability to control the media and all achieved through the greatest period of change the game has ever seen.

Spot on. Pains me to say it, but this is highly accurate.

What about the hard shoulder trouser mess incident? Surely that ruins any man's legacy?

I despise the old twat so much he will never garner the merest smattering of praise from me.
