Chris Gayle is quality as well.

Too fucking right. Dominated all forms of the game in NZ and has made a very sound and occasionally brutal start to this series.

By the way, were you lads in the UK getting commentary from David Gower, Mike Atherton, etc? To be fair, I've not seen a lot of Monty playing in the last 12 months or so, so I don't know about his form other than the not-so-impressive stats put before me on telly, but it seemed like they were sticking the boot into him a bit. Is it justified?

Whilst this is only the beginning of a series, surely one eye is already on the Ashes later this year. One thing I remember about Monty is him taking 5 in an innings in Perth, a place not really that well suited to spinners, during the last Ashes series. Given Australia's woes at the minute, I'd say a specialist spinner is a must for the Ashes and who else is there to challenge Monty for that role in the side?

AS, yes we get the same commentary as you mate, Gower, Botham, Hussain, Atherton et al, and while some of the comments on Monty have been justified, he has had a disappointing 12 months, its the usual 'British' thing. They build him up to be the best in the world at what he does and then kick when he is down. He has talent, he had a good start to his International career, he has had a dip, just like most other Cricketers over the years.

He needs a confidence boost, there is no doubt of that, but he is only a 5 wicket haul away from being full of bounce, spirit and invention again.

He hasn't developed though.

Not as a spinner.

& not as a batsman or fielder at which he is completely hopeless.

You can get away as being that crap with the bat if you are great with the ball (ie/ McGrath) but Monty isn't & there i sno excuse for a Test player to be that bad in the field.

Monty's problem is that he has no variation. They're just talking about it on Sky now, he needs to vary his pace and develop some different deliveries.

Greame Swann impressed me in India before Christmas, I'd never thought of him as a Test player before but he out bowled Monty by far in the last series. Besides him there's young Adil Rashid coming through but it's too early for him just yet. By the time the next Ashes series comes round however, he'll probably be numero uno. Both Swann and Rashid have the advantage that they can bat as well as bowl so Monty really needs to pull his finger out if he wants to keep his place.

192/1 now. Slow as fuck this game.

These referrals are getting on my nerves already. I hope they do away with it ASAP.

Agree. LBW is a guessing game, one of the few things in world sport where you have to base a decision on the hypothetical. This is just confusing things even more. Then again, so is that shite umpire with Koertzen (what is his name?)

In theory getting decisions correct 99% of the time should be a good thing but I hate the way you think a wicket goes down but then you get an appeal and all the joy of the moment is gone. The decision should be left to the umpire and the rights and wrongs can be discussed later as they have been for the past 150 years.

Just clocked the 51 all out, oh dear. Fuckin' shite, dreading the Aussies coming over and teaching us a lesson when they are wank.

Maybe it's money and celebrity that interests the England players these days?

Me and the old man were saying exactly the same earlier VV. the IPL is where its at. Money, money, money. Plus, our bowlers are fucking brainless and cannot adapt to new environments or surfaces quickly.

The WI bowlers pitch the ball up and take wickets, so obviously banging it in half way down time and time again and getting knocked for a boundary is the way forward. This wasn;t the bouncy Sabina Park pitch of 5 years ago, but obviously nobody told Harmison that.

This is hardly the most rampant attack that the WI have ever had, but they bowled us out with a mixture of using their brains and exploting the pitch and taking advantage of the fact that we have little in the way of 'game intelligence'.

I won my bet which softens the blow a bit , but am still amazed by that.

With concentrating on the football I missed the main thrust of what happened. Did the pitch suddenly go bad or were they mainly bad shots.

I'm not quite happened mate, the pitch certainly didn't fall apart, the WI made good use of the new ball and bowled in the right areas. Our batsmen took care of the rest.

Was flicking between both the cricket and the footy.

Believe me England were lucky.

When they were on the ropes at 23-7 the man who had got 5 of those wickets, Jerome Taylor I think is his name, came off with a calf problem so the WINdies had to change their strike bowler.

The form that lad was in he would've wiped floor with the tail end and broken that 100 yr record held by the Aussies against England when they raped them 45 all out.

Hardly a bouncer bowled.

Mostly full of a length.

No stupid outswingers.

Kept the batsman trapped in the crease.

Sweet stuff.

English arrogance and the IPL is the only thing driving that team!

I play academy cricket for Notts and honestly....i think i could do better than Bell. I do not understand how we have amazingly failed here. I knew that the pitch was slow and that it could lead to quick wickets if the batsmen lose their concentration but i never expected this.

Englands problems in a nutshell.
