PS3 problem and solution.

This week my Playstation 3 fucked up. It has stopped reading any format of disc which is a bit of a bugger as you'd imagine. Turns out that this is a fairly common occurrence with the 60gb models and it's the laser burning itself out. Now, I hardly use the thing and bought it in March 07 so it's well out of warranty. I did a bit of research and found that there are a few places that will repair it to the tune of about £90.

However...

On a whim I decided to call Sony themselves (08705 99 88 77) to see what they had to say for themselves and they are going to collect, repair and return it for free as a goodwill gesture. Which is nice. The downside is that they're picking it up on the 22nd and it will take up to 3 weeks to get it back.

Anyway, just wanted to let people know about the fault. Sony are well aware of it and as I said it seems very common. I think the only reason it hasn't got the Xbox red-ring-of-death's publicity is because they're dealing with the problem quickly and for free.
