I must remember to give a gratuity to the mail man and the trash haulers before the holidays. I don't want them thinking me a tightwad. Then I should shoot myself.

I used to go with a girl from Virginia, she lived in Hesketh Bank with her sister, just them in a house, but when her Mom paid a surprise visit I was told to get out and heard her say don't bring that Hood here again.

All OK Torahboy?

Candy is actually a type of sweet rather than the whole foodstuff. I think you are both right here.

No.

"Candy, also called sweets (British English) or lollies (Australian English, New Zealand English), is a confection that features sugar as a principal ingredient. The category, called sugar confectionery, encompasses any sweet confection, including chocolate, chewing gum, and sugar candy."

I see what you mean there, I could of started with a girl from the Blue Hills of Virginia.

I soon as I saw the highlighted words that tune came straight into my head, can't get it out now.

I don't buy that. Chocolates aren't candy, they are chocolates. Candy is a certain hard type of sweet, the stuff that covers the chocolate in Smarties and M and Ms for example. I refuse to accept all these 'Americanisms' and such.

You don't have to buy it, I'm not selling it. Americans refer to loads of things as candy, including chocolate as Tony has pointed out.
