man of the match - Game 19 - West Bromich Albion - Home - PL

I tell you what always surprises me is when people pick a centre half as one of their top three in a match where there wasn't a huge amount of defensive work to be done. They're not all mopes, either - Jules went for Carra at number three.

I thought Carra had a good game and came forward - as well as across to the right to cover for Albert - pretty well. However, I can't see beyond the players who were instrumental in the goals and main attacking threats after a largely one-sided affair like this was.

Carra was brilliant yesterday, talking to the players, telling them to keep the concentration, dealing with that yard dog Bednar and ruling when he came forward. If Carragher is worried about being moved to right back, he should stop putting brilliant little cameos when he's in that position. He's done it two games on the trot now. Plus I don't think any of the other attackers put in enough of a contribution over the course of the match to warrant a placing.

I think against a weak West Brom, loads of our attacking moves fell to pieces when Dirk got involved. I think Dirk has a place in the team but not in every game, a bit like Mascherano. He excels in games where a fight is crucial and he'll spend more time without the ball but in games where he's going to see more of it, he starts to look a luxury. I also think the placement of the runs he make can be really suspect at times, often getting in the way and his determination is sometimes costly as he's not quite aware of how the rest of the move is shaping out.

In big games he can look outstanding. In easier games he looks expendable.

Have to agree with the bit in bold, but as I said in another thread, yesterday I thought his link up play was excellent. He played a big part in two of the goals and as usual his work rate was second to none. He also seemed to have discovered how to control the ball with his first touch.

agger, carra, aurelio, pepe and riera all had a better game than kuyt? I didn't put him in my top 3 but he certainly wasn't bottom, he had a very solid game I thought.
