He is absolutely fantastic and one of the few drivers who havent had some kind of leg up from their families. Probably the best driver in the wet of all time. Cant believe how him and Andy Murray are disregarded / hated.

Did have to laugh though when BBC quoted that he was crying during the national anthem and one guy on twitter said surely the Monaco anthem isn't that bad.

Yeah, I don't get the Hamilton hatred (or the Murray hatred) at all.

Absolute miracle him walking away from that. They need to somehow soften the track side of them barriers. Concrete and steel next to cars doing 200mph almost.... yeah fuck that right off. Not sure what the solution is but you don't see tyre walls much anymore.

Whilst it is a miracle what happened yesterday, a few things appear to have gone wrong. The car shouldn't split the way it did, so no fire. Plus the barrier is designed to absorb the impact and not split, so no chance of decapitation, which thankfully the halo prevented.

Interesting article below about both sides of the safety aspect.

Formula 1: Romain Grosjean's escape leaves sport with soul-searching to do - https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/formula1/55124967

Firstly, the barrier itself, and how the car managed to penetrate it.

"The angle must have been so precise," Wolff said, "like a knife going through the barrier. I didn't think modern barriers could split like this, and we need to analyse how this could happen."

Was this a failure of the barrier? Was it a function of the design of the front of an F1 car if it hit a barrier in such a way that was previously unknown?

It blows my mind that there aren't more serious injuries. Obviously a lot was done since Senna died but the cars are even faster. Massa nearly died from a loose bolt from the car in-front even with a top of the range helmet on. Its a mental sport.

The last really serious one was Jules Bianchi. I think the 'halo' cockpit protection came about as a direct result of his accident and injuries.

The car absolutely should split the way it did. It's a carbon tub safety cell to which the rear end (engine, etc.) is bolted. The fire is pretty much inevitable and worse because it's the opening lap of the race - fuel tank full.

The barrier should not have split. Horizontal elements are supposed to be bolted/welded.

Yeah. It certainly did. But a few laps into the restart Lance Stroll was trapped in his inverted car because of the halo.

The halo was being planned for quite some time. Bianchi's was one of the many incidents that led to its inception.

You do. Well, you don't. Most concrete and steel is protected by a deformable barrier whether it's tyres, safety blocks (often water-filled) and/or a rubber-type covering. In fact, the bit Grosjean hit was not only repaired for yesterday's race, it was protected with tyres that you couldn't see.

Can I have brownie points for causing a similar horse/stable door revision at Paul Ricard?
