The "things that make you realise you're getting older" thread

Been doing a course at Liverpool Uni of an evening, and the other week walked past the union with loads of students pouring in for a Thursday night pissup. I had this slight sadness and an urge to join them, but then realised my knee was stiff with the cold and that I was quite tired.

I never used to feel the cold that much, it's getting to my joints these days though. I'm even considering wearing a t shirt in bed. I can still hack the cold weather outside without dressing up like the others as an Eskimo. I think that's just the last ounces of youthfulness clinging on though.

I've not got anything planned for tomorrow night yet and it doesn't bother me in the slightest that I might end up having a quiet one with the missus.

I'm not sure if that's age or me just progressively becoming more lazy and boring.

What's the difference?

I am taking up swimming for fitness because my dickie knee can't take too much running.

I got bought PJ's for Christmas.

I am looking at "family cars" and thinking "Oooh I like that one - very practical!"

I don't stay out getting drunk when I know I have to be up in the morning.

I find myself shaking my head when I talk to 18 year olds. When I do I am always thinking one thing in my head "You'll learn!".

Was just thinking that.

Oh and the imminent arrival of kids and the realisation that I have neither the skills nor maturity to look after them.

Watching on the busses and seeing arguments over a 5p fair. Now its £1.49 ouch!!

Why would that make you feel old Simon? You weren't born when On The Busses was out. That's like saying the fact Julius Caesar didn't have a mobile phone makes you feel old.

I thought that myself. The sad thing is, I do remember 5p bus fares. I remember when it cost 5p on the bus from Bromborough village to the Oval, and 9p to get in the baths. I feel like my fucking Grandad typing this post.

When I was young, you could get a 1p fare. What's the smallest bus fare these days?

And maybe Simon's 'Ouch!!' was him feeling the pain of old twats like me and Hermes.
