Goalscoring, do we have a problem on our hands?

I’d love us to sign a big conventional forward who’s rapid and have Salah play anywhere he wants across the front line. Go 3 at the back and  have Trent and Robbo as proper wing backs. If we could find the next Bruno Fernandes to run out of midfield and score 15-20 goals a season that’d be great. Fabinho and Thiago/Hendo could anchor a midfielder with a midfielder who’s basically a forward in it. We need to start finding goals from different areas because teams are having an easy time with us these days.

Im getting worried now, amazing goal by Salah today, but very unusual for him to miss a one on one like his second big chance.

Mane, I have no idea whats going on with him, it looks like his confidence might be shit to pieces.

Firmino is finished and Jota is allowed a bad day.

We should hav escored at least three goals today, could have been more.

Salah needs to trust his right foot more. That 1 v 1 chance he had, he could easily have taken it round the keeper onto his right foot to slot it home. Decided to poke it with his left foot, straight at the goalie.

Mane's head is wrecked. People have criticised him for laughing after missing his 1 v 1 chance from Salah's pass. But I think he was simply wondering "what kind of fuckery did I just do?" It wasn't a laugh that implied he didn't give a fuck. It was a kind of laugh that implies he can't just believe how shit he has become in front of goal. Even when he scored vs Leeds, you sensed it was a nervous finish. The ball went rolling into the bottom corner when he had the whole net to aim at.

For me, Jota is a bit of a worry. He came back from injury on fire. But now looks as if he has been infected by Mane and Firmino. 4 games without a goal despite numerous chances.

Only four players have scored more than two PL goals this season, and only six players have scored more than one.

From the players availible at the moment, only eight players have scored.

The situation is basically this, unless our strikers are scoring we are royally fucked.

That said, if we compare it to other teams at the top of the table maybe its not so bad after all.

At least we have one consistent goalscorer unlike some others.

How Chelsea are still up here fighting for top four, only God knows.

Failure to strengthen from a position of strength has been most of the reason for this, along with covid of course. Nobody is allowed a bad day as there arent replacements and if more than one player has a 'mare then we are mid table fodder.

No parts of the team are functioning correctly. We looked somewhat improved all over when fabinho and milner were starting games in midfield, but klopp being unwilling (or unable) to trust Davies since Philipps injury, combined with milner being 148, means we're pretty fucked. It's mad, but we would appear to be absolutely desperate to get Philipps back.

Imagine saying that a few months ago. This season is bonkers on so many levels.

This has been the case every fucking time we have a good team for about 20 years. At least we haven’t sold our best players yet.

I think Mo and Sadio are both over thinking things. Against both Leeds and Newcastle, Sadio and Mo's goals were just struck without much thought. Some might say Sadio nearly missed but that's my point. If he'd had to think, he likely would have. Yesterday, the ball came to Mo and he just smashed it into the net.

All the other chances they had time to think what they were going to do and fucked up every one of them. When Mo scored 40 or whatever in hisfirst season, he wasnt really thinking much apart from twatting the ball. Sure, players have got wise to him and probably sadio but they both need to just get back to not taking so many touches.

Didn’t like that Salah walked off yesterday shaking his head, looked a right “fuck this” moment to me.

We'd just conceded in the last minute, he was probably pissed off with himself, Mane and Jota making a complete mess finishing our chances.

We outperformed our xg last year by 10, as much as we're underperforming this. That's a 20 goal swing. That's huge

We have scored 4 in 146 chances. This relates back to scoring once in every 37 chances we have. That is an absolute shocking return. Considering you have, on a good day, in the teens number of chances, that means we are only likely to score once in every second game or more. No wonder we are getting so few wins. Our goalscoring, besides Salah, has fallen off a cliff.

So that basically says if mane and firmino take the chances that they should be expected to score, we'd be ok? And looking at that table, it's interesting to see the teams around us.

I was thinking about this goalscoring problem a bit the other day. Last season we scored all kinds of goals. We had the Salah typical ones. We had mane getting on Trent's crosses. Firmino chipping in away from home at least. The full backs got the odd goal. The centre backs chipped in (well vvd!) on corners. Trent banged a couple direct from free kicks. Ecen midfielders scored once in a while. This season and especially since Christmas, we've got Salah.

We brought in Thiago and Jota.

And yet our weaknesses at the time were potentially at the back. More importantly,we were top of the League on or just befor Jan 1st with 1,off and on,recognised centre half and bought nobody for almost a month. We then bought two of the cheapest options available. As for Thiago and Jota, one was a free transfer and the other saw a player exchange in return for our first payment installment.

No it wasn't. At the time we had 3 of the top Cb's in the league and had seen enough of Fabinho to know he was head and shoulders over anyone else we had or could realistically bring in.

Your second sentence proves that.

I do not really care how the deals were structured - the bottom line is we brought in an a world class midfielder and a proven international for backup upfront.
