Gunn's defence would be everyone said Guardians (specifically Rocket and Groot or Weasel in Suicide Squad) wouldn't work but it's the kind of quirky character that he loves bringing to life.

 

I agree with you though, I think they're overcompensating for the Cavill Superman and have flown right by Christopher Reeves and too far the other way.

Agree - Gunn’s previous output though have all had very strong comedy elements to them, hence why those characters worked. 
 

Superman isn’t really know for its humour and wackiness. 


I’m not writing it off completely, after all, the “S” is a Krypton symbol of hope, however, certainly has a lot to prove (and a lot riding on it).

The best Superman films (with Christopher Reeves) were known for their humour
