Robert Rodriguez had been hinting for the past few days that he would have a big announcement at the San Diego Comic-Con this week, and yesterday he was finally able to reveal the news: he has picked up the rights to do a brand new animated Heavy Metal movie. Based on the popular fantasy magazine, the original Heavy Metal film was released back in 1981 and was directed by Gerald Potterton. Most recently David Fincher was trying to set up a Heavy Metal remake, but it would appear that he is no longer involved. However, Heavy Metal owner and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles creator Kevin Eastman will be involved, and the project will be developed through Rodriguez’s new Quick Draw Studios.

While trading David Fincher for Robert Rodriguez might be seen as a step down, somehow the material seems to suit Rodriguez a little better. Rodriguez is a fan of both animation and fantasy, and last year it was announced that he would direct a remake of Ralph Bakshi’s Fire and Ice, although the status of that project is currently unknown.

Interestingly, it appears that he also wants to make Heavy Metal a collaborative effort, and in addition to assembling a number of international artists and directors, he is inviting fans to submit ideas for the movie. I guess that’s one way to avoid pissing off the hardcore followers.

The pieces are coming together for Quentin Tarantino’s latest film, the Leone-inspired western Django Unchained, as one more actor is currently in negotiations to join the already impressive cast. Deadline reports that none other than Kevin Costner is in talks to play one of the movie’s antagonists, Ace Woody, who works for plantation owner Calvin Candie (Leonardo DiCaprio). Woody is a sadistic trainer of male fighting slaves. He pits the fighters against one another, and has no problem “mistreating and even killing the slaves who don’t measure up.” The role would be a significant change of pace for Costner who has been primarily known for his good natured characters. When made official, he’ll join a cast that now includes Jamie Foxx, Christoph Waltz, Samuel L. Jackson and the aforementioned DiCaprio.

At this point in his filmography, I’ve learned to expect the unexpected when it comes to Tarantino’s casting. Not only that, but I also trust that whoever he casts will work for whatever role they’re given. Costner will probably fit in Django Unchained the same way Travolta fit in Pulp Fiction or Robert Forster fit in Jackie Brown; giving him a chance to shine in a part that he wouldn’t normally have the opportunity to play. That’s not to say that Costner is as washed up as Travolta was in the early 90s, but he has been less successful/reliable than he used to be.

On Battleship.

1) Never heard of it until right now

2) Having read up on it, its budget is rumoured to be north of a $100million dollars. Which astonishing for a movie based on a board game.

3) I don't remember aliens being in the game.

4) Liam Neeson really will do any old shite these days won't he.

5) It looks absolutely terrible.

What the shit is this? Looks awful.

As a character, the messages Snow White gives to little girls are a bit shit. Run away from trouble, pick up mess after men and wait for Prince Charming to save you when you, err... fall asleep. It's not surprising, really, that someone has decided to try to make her a bit more proactive. "Ooh, give her a sword and let her hit people and stuff."

Is this film anything to do with the original Django spaghetti westerns?

They were great.

As for Costner, he's played plenty of cowboys, and his character in the magnificent "Open Range" (which has one of the best and most brutally realistic gunfights ever) was a pretty vicious and morally vague murderer.

Apparently Tarantino wanted Will Smith to star in Django Unchained, but he turned it down. Bill Simmons has an interesting article on Will Smith and his career choices here: Bill Simmons on Ryan Reynolds, Will Smith, and the perception of success in Hollywood - Grantland
