Looks like Barry deal off! How did we end up with them...

Alonso was one of our best if not the best outfield players last night, its not his fault the players around him cant control a moving ball.

When you play two CM they will get run over when your 4 front players constantly keep losing the ball and you are hit on the break.

Barry would have added fuck all to our game last night if he had swapped with Alonso, he probably would have made it worse though.

Barry couldn't have been any worse than Alonso, he is a better player, as his form in the premiership suggests.

I was thinking similar to Fungus today about Barry - could it be the fact that he is now cup tied until February lowers the asking price and seals a deal?

Or is it more likely that the owners would lower their valuation as well because he's now cup tied?

If they were only prepared to pay £12M for him before tonight, then surely they would lower their valuation as well?

Truth is Barry wanted a move, but not enough to force Villa to sell him like Keane did at Spurs.

So fuck him and let him rot at Villa for the rest of his career.

If you look at how us and Villa have approached things this summer (both the Barry deal itself and other transfers), they've clearly got more ambition to improve than we have.

They've made some good signings but their still shit up front and its that, that will stop them really progressing.

The Barry saga is over as far as i'm concerned. The owners/pParry have spelt it out in no uncertain terms, we will not meet Villa's asking price.

Time to move on to cheaper/younger alternatives.

Anyone who says that Villa are shit up front just needs to check how many goals they scored last season

Its in defence that they where let down last season if they had sortted that out they might have gotten 4th place

and it is there they might struggle again this season as they have just one in one out at CB but the new fullbacks could be an improvment i see them 5th or 6th at worse its Everton Spurs Portsmouth Villa who will make up the 2nd top 4 up in the Prem for me

Newcastle Man City West Ham and then the dross

From Tony Barrett.....

Meanwhile, Gareth Barry's appearance for Aston Villa in a UEFA Cup tie last night makes no difference to Benitez's desire to sign the England man.

Barry played and scored the opening goal in Villa's 3-0 victory over FH Hafnarfjordur, meaning he would now be cup tied for the group stages of the Champions League should he move to Anfield.

Benitez is refusing to give up hope that he will eventually get his man but he still faces a battle to convince the Liverpool board that Barry is worth Villa's asking price.

Reds chief executive Rick Parry recently made a statement insisting the club feel Barry is over-priced but, as is the case with Xabi Alonso, being cup tied does not reduce the chances of a move taking place.

Villa boss Martin O'Neill is refusing to rule anything out.
