People who need definitive answers on TV shows need to repeatedly run face first into a wall. The Sopranos was always going to end like it did. It's refusal to tie up other loose ends (ie The Russian 'interrior decorator') was part of it's brilliance.

I watched Chase in an interview a number of years back, maybe about 6 months after the show finished and he was absolutely clear Tony didn't die. But he claimed that wasn't the point, the point was because of the life he led, just because you survived one war, doesn't mean everything is safe - his life meant he was always looking over his shoulder and could die at any moment, even at a point that he should have felt at his safest.
