Poundland used to sell a pocket short wave PLL synthed radio.

 

With it using a fairly standard PLL section you can modify the radio to give it far greater coverage than the standard SW broadcast bands, including the sought-after 30Mhz+ section for analogue cordless phone coverage. I've not tried to modify the FM 88-108Mhz section yet for airband coverage, but as soon as I can be arsed trying I'll let you know.

 

Anyway, add a BFO to inject a carrier into the IF stage so you can receive SSB signals, add an antenna socket for your longwire (A baluned up G5RV works a treat, too) and you've got yourself a pretty kickarse SW receiver.
