I was walking through town bladdered on my birthday a few years ago and called my paddy mate who, although a bitter, loves and adores Aldo. Who walks past but John himself so I ask him to say hello to my mate. A bit of face gurning by Aldo at what's being said to him by my mate and he passes me the phone back saying he'd just been told to fuck off. Turns out my mate thought I was taking the piss and to this day still believes he was talking to some random on the street.

Aldo invited me round to his boozer that afternoon for a birfdee drink and was good to his word when I turned up mere minutes later (free drink was calling).

It's funny - before he got that nasty achilles injury I never really thought he'd keep much of a link with the club. I HOPED he would, but he was always making noises about wanting to play in Italy and sometimes sounded a bit, well, semi-detached. After his injury he seemed to reconcile himself with the club and, my god, he really seems to love us now. It's touching, because he was glorious as a player.

There are youtube compilations and there are breathtaking youtube compilations. This is the best one I've seen (shame the music sucks as usual). Not just the standard goals but the assists are even more special. The next 6 minutes will fly by . . .

By a strange coincidence it was our awards evening tonight and Digger spoke at it last year (having also done it a few years ago). We were let down by some soap "star" and we still had his number from the last time so chanced a cheeky "Can you help us out tonight, John?" request. He not only came through, but was a really passionate advocate of education, as well as the pastoral care for young people that we specialise in. He didn't want a penny, either (unlike the soap "star" who wanted a hundred quid and wouldn't do a speech). Leg off the pitch as well as on it, much like the man who pips him to top spot in my all time list of greats.

Can't believe no-one's asked this yet? Who was the "soap star" Paul? bet you it was that irritating not-gay-at-all Tinhead prick off Brookside wasn't it? Wasn't it????

Saw Johnnie Barnes on Bold Street one afternoon when he was in his prime. I was with some mates and we all said, "Johnnie Barnes!" He didn't break stride, winked and said, "Alright lads."

It was a Scully moment. Was that really Johnny Barnes walking through town?

I must add as an appendix here, he was wearing a full shell suit. Though, to be fair, this was acceptable in the eighties.

I love John Barnes, even liked him on Channel 5.

Met him back in the very early 90's. We were over for an Arsenal game during Souness' days,(they hammered us 2-0 with goals from Wright and that Limpar) and we met him in the car park at Anfield on the Friday. He was an absolute gent as was Redknapp, Harkness and Rob Jones who were also about. Unfortunately he was injured.

Ian Rush also pulled up in a car, he jumped out looking really mad, my mate called him over, he sort of kept on going but then seemed to catch himself on and came over. I think he'd scored 2 or 3 in a mid week match just before and we were saying well done etc, he just thanked us and ran of in.

I can't remember if he played against Arsenal, I remember Dean Saunders missing a sitter with an air shot and that's about it.

Anyway, John Barnes, my favourite ever Liverpool player.

Wish i was old enough to have been able to really appreciative how good he was in his prime. He was the first player i had put on my shirt though so he obviously made an impression.

What i don't get is when talking about the all time greats, Liverpool players never get mentioned. Especially a player like Barnes who if he was playing now would be right up there amongst the Ronaldo's and Messi's. The poise and elegance coupled with that explosiveness and strength. there aren't many players like that around even now.

Pre-Sky, mate. Football back then doesn't count.
