Imagine Barnes circa 1987-1991 in the current side. One of the current first-choice front 3 would have to be back-up so the squad would be exponentially stronger.

I've had this very conversation with my youngest lad.

He looks at our front three and then asks me just how good was John Barnes?

I tell him he was the best player i've actually seen and would walk in to any team, would probably be the first £200m player too.

He generally just shakes his head as I stare off in to the distance.

Has to make you laugh reading online Twitter twats tell The John Barnes he's out of touch, or doesn't understand racism just because he disagrees. As if blackness is a hegemonic hive mind, that doesn't have Tories or isn't 4 years removed from an amazingly charismatic leader drone bombing weddings.

It does not need reiterating on this forum, because we all know it, but I'm going to say it anyway. John walked into a club that did chant "Liverpool are white", had bananas hurled at him on live TV, and was consistently blamed for any national team failures on his "laziness".

He was the best player in the world between 87-89, the best player in the best team this country has ever seen and was an absolute model in dignity, grace and his capacity to rise above the constant humiliation black folks suffered in an era when murdering Stephen Lawrence on the straight was a vaguely 50/50 call.

The guy is a God. An absolute God.

And is good natured on a level that almost beggars belief.

I see some far right cunt called David Vance has had his arse royally handed to him by Digger on Twitter today. Accused, apparently out of nowhere, Barnes's soldier dad of being a 'coward' for deciding to stay in Britain instead of returning to 'serve his country' when his posting here ended. Barnes, with much more finesse and politeness than I could ever have mustered in that situation, pointed out that, in fact, his dad did return home to Jamaica, while Barnes' stayed here to develop his career. Cunt's come back with asking why Barnes' didn't represent Jamaica in football - Barnes said they never asked him to.

Looking at that cunts timeline makes for miserable reading. Proper unashamed bigot.

John Barnes is possibly my favourite ever footballer. His signing was a pivotal moment for the club, and the way he dealt with the abuse at the time was incredible.  But I still disagree with a significant number of his comments on contemporary race issues, and think there's a reason he's the go-to black guy for large parts of the media – and it's not because he's articulate (though he certainly is that). Doesn't mean I don't still love him, or that I condone the abuse gets, but I don't enjoy hearing him speak (on non-football matters) very much nowadays.

Yep they know he will say something stupid. He just needs to shut up. Oh and stop watching porn videos of black men running a train on white girls while preaching on race matters.

Nothing wrong with a couple of black fellas having sex with a white woman. However, the same can’t be said for the fella punching her whilst doing so.

Up until fairly recently, i always thought Barnes was held in high regard.

Struggle to find a good word said about his views by a lot of people these days, particularly among young black people

He came across ok in that Harrys Boys thing on telly the other week. He wasn't doing his rap every 5 minutes.

Any examples of John Barnes spouting nonsense then? Can’t say I’ve noticed it.Seems pretty spot on in most things he comes out with. In fact he was speaking more sense just last week.

Ive only heard him say sensible stuff myself.

Those that have an issue with him are probably the folk that get offended about everything, and God forbid somebody in the public eye isn't as offended as them.

That’s it.Would rather listen to Digger talk about race issues with everything he’s been through than some Ultra Feminist, blog writing white chick that writes for the Guardian. Barnes says things that get people actually thinking about the issues as opposed to regurgitating stuff that others say.

Just do a search on social media, particularly twitter.

Im not including the loons, but lots of young black people on these mediums do not like his views.

Twitter is full of loons of all creeds and colours so criticism on there is almost a guarantee you are speaking some type of common sense.
