Penalties?

On the other thread it said there would have been penalties to settle who goes through between Turkey and Czech if it had been a draw. I found this most unusual for a group. What would have happened if say the Swiss and the Turks were on level points but obviously playing in different matches?

Check out this bad boy.

.....................GP GF GA PTS

01 Netherlands.2...7....1....6

02 Romania......2...1....1....2

03 Italy...........2...1....4....1

04 France........2...1....4....1

If Romania lose 3-0 to Holland and Italy and France draw 0-0, all three teams will have 2 points, scored 1 conceded 4.

Italy would qualify on the basis of coefficients from the 2006 FIFA World Cup qualifying and UEFA Euro 2008 qualifying matches, having a coefficient of 2.36 points per game against Romania's 2.25. Basically having played better in qualifying not just for the Euros (which could be fair) but also for the last world cup - a completely different tournament! What a fuck up. I hope it happens.

One year England, Ireland and Holland were all on target to finish completely level in the last game. One of the Euro tournies, can't remember which year.

I can't remember much about it now actually. Damn. It would have been a good post too.

Erm.

The plan was to draw lots to decide who qualified.

I think that in the end England qualified as group leaders (may have even been on goals scored) but Ireland and Holland were tied.

But that year there the number of entrants wasn't such that you just took the top two from each group, there was a place or two for best 3rd-placed team. So in the end Ireland and Holland both went through. The lots were still drawn to decide who finished second or third, and so who played who in the next round.

By the way - what the hell do lots look like? And who judges who's drawn the best ones anyway?

it was 1988 and ireland didnt go through usssr went through, ireland would have went through if they hadnt of conceded in the last 5 minutes against holland

Hate when they're described as a lottery or the toss of a coin.

It takes bottle and technique to score them.  A perfect penalty can't be saved.

You often hear guff about how you can't replicate the pressure of the situation so why bother practising your penalties. In other news, Rory McIlroy dismissed the idea of practising his putting because you can't replicate the pressure of the 72nd hole in the Masters.

Replying to a 2008 post feels weird but it was the 1990 world cup. England Rep of Ireland Netherlands and Egypt had equal results in the 1st 2 rounds of games 1-1 and 0-0 so going into the 3rd game all were equal on 2 points and goal aggregate of 1-1. The Irish drew 1-1 with the Dutch and Mark Wright scored for England to beat Egypt. If Egypt had equalised all teams would have finished perfectly equal and lots would have been drawn to separate them. As it was, The Irish and Dutch drew lots (pots like any cup draw to see who finished 2nd and 3rd in the group). Ireland "finished" 2nd, played Romania (won on pens) in round 2 and lost to hosts Italy in the quarters. England topped the group and played Belgium (Platt volley winner in injury time of extra time) and reached semi final and lost on pens to eventual winners West Germany. Netherlands finished as one of the 4 (of 6) top 3rd placed teams and played the Germans and lost 2-1 in the infamous Rijkaard Voller spitting incident and obviously lost.

Was fascinated with that world cup but the football was pure unadulterated filth. Ireland played 5 games, scored 2 goals and went home heroes. Including the 2 pens v Cameroon, England who were one of the most entertaining teams in the tournament and had Platt, Gazza, Waddle, Barnes, Beardsley and Linekar in their line up scored 7 in 6 games, 2 of which were in extra time.

Sorry for the ramble!

I'm disappointed that he pussied out. Some on here talked him up as a leader. Not much leading is it, letting a young player like Can, take a penalty in a shoot out before him?

What a load if drivel. How do you know that he didn't and Klopp was like, 'yeah, good joke'. If you're not a good penalty taker, don't be a brainless twat and put yourself forward just to appease brainless supporters. Good leadership is about putting the right people in the right places.

I always thought Hyppia and Carragher were shitbags for not taking one in 2005.

Hang on a minute, no. I didn't think that and I doubt anyone else in the entire world did.

Massive pussies, the pair of em
