By negotiating to sell Alonso to Juve we have effectively broadcast to Villa that we have £14-15m to play with, thus making it difficult to agree a few for less than £15m. We should have at least attempted to agree a fee with Villa first. I'm confident that Barry will sign, but our bargaining position could have been improved had we dealt with the matter slightly differently. We revealed our hand to Villa too early to negotiate a better deal.

As much as bringing some statisics into the debate is well worthy of an effort those are always going to be flawed mate. Villa, being a worse side, are always going to have the ball for a considerably smaller period of the game that Liverpool are, and as such their players will complete less passes. Even the percentage of success is effected as you're not passing to Gerrard and Torres but Carew and Petrov.
