That's a good point. Alonso has been brilliant in preseason so far. This has really given him a kick up the arse.

 

Yes, he has. But let's wait to see him do it in the premiership first, shall we - it's\one thing producing against Valarenga; another against Man United? And secondly, why should he need such a keep up the proverbial - smacks of a player playing within his comfort zone for too long, and a lack of motivation. What happens come September 1st and his place is secure?

this is where mentality comes into it, and you have to think that is why he's up for sale in the first place.

I think that's somewhat of an overstatement. It's not that Alonso's effort has been lacking, he's just not hit the heights that we know he can. It's probably down to confidence and the sort of performances that he's put in (or if you want to be pessimistic, able to put in because of the standard of the opposition) in preseason will only help to build that up. We know that Xabi CAN do it because he's done it before.
