Amy Winehouse...

Michelle Gayle is getting some good airplay out of this. She was on yesterday and now she's on Sky News, introduced as a 'friend' of Amy Winehouse, she then corrected the presenter and said 'I wasn't her friend I only met her twice, but we were both in the music business from an early age which is why I think I'm here.'

Erm.

Hahahahahaha!

Who is Michelle Gayle anyway? That black bird who was in Grange Hill or Eastenders and had one record?

I saw her quoted in several of today's papers

That's her yeah. She seems to be trying to set herself up as the Puff Daddy to Winhouse's Notorious B.I.G. Pretty ballsey considering she didn't know her, hats off like.

Fucking hell, I saw her name, warcked my brains, and that was the only person I could come up with. But then I thought, "Nah, can't be"

Hats off? I want to kow who her PR agent is. He/ she deserves an award.

  • 4 years later...

Watched the Amy Doc twice and it has really hit me. What a tragic shame. I usual could not give two fucks about celeb deaths and say tough but this poor girl never stood a chance surrounded by the fuckers she was.

Always liked her music but seeing it in context makes it all the more powerful.

Can I find my copy of back to black, can I fuck.

It is a must watch.

She was brilliant, the saddest bit is that I don't think she ever really put the truly great album out there that her talent deserved. That said Back to Black, You Know that I'm No Good and, in particular, Tears Dry on Their Own are some of the best pop songs of the last 20 years.

It's like that first Arctic Monkeys album, it's easy to put it all down to being to blinkered millennial tastes, but - compared to most of the shite I liked back in my early 20s - this stuff still makes perfect sense. No idea how people can't see it, but that's how opinions work isn't it...

Actually, that's not true, my musical taste has always been impeccable, just today I was listening to Crass at work. Still ace.

I thought that as an artist she was good, but not one of the greats.

Without knowing her or being an expert on addiction, it's hard to know where the intersection is between sickness/addiction and personal responsibility. No matter where you stand on that continuum, it's still a sad loss. In her 27 years she made a greater contribution than most who live much longer.

Actually that's bollocks, gone and relistened now for the first time in ages. Back to Black is definitely that album.

I was gonna say! That was a very good album.

Saw her live in 2007 I think it was. She was six months into her junkie days and skinny as fuck but still absolute class. People sometimes get blinkered by anything modern being better than anything old. Most recent (last 15 years) music has been shite but there are a few gems in there. Her talent was one.

For those of us who are relatively straight laced I think it's easy to just question someones mentality and "personal responsibility" as you put it.

In reality I think it's a lot more complex than that.

The key in these things for me is prevention rather than rehabilitation.
