Underrated British Comedy.

Apart from the obvious successes of Black Adder etc, there are a few gems which go unnoticed and forgotten. I'll start with a few. What do you think.

To be honest I don't really rate the top two you've mentioned and haven't seen the other one.

 

I'd say Spaced is underrated, can't think of too much else right now. Maybe the sketch show Big Train as well.

Its very 'Office' like in that its slower paced and observational. Very funny when you begin to know the characters.

 

The guy from the bank adverts "shareholders bubbly" is in it.

I thought Lead Balloon was really good, I also really liked Not Going Out with Lee Mack. Not quite sure if i'd class them as 'gems' but probably two of the most watchable sitcoms for the last 5 years

The first couple of series of Shelley were outstanding. A lot of the stuff was used to model Seinfeld. I modeled my adolescence on Hywel Bennett.

Big Train I'd go along with. Man Stroke Woman and garth marenghi's darkplace were also excellent. (As recommended in Alan's British Comedy for ipod thread).

Can't help feeling there was a touch of sarcasm in the replys to my post. It maybe an idea to look at the meaning of "underrated" It is not simply the amount of acclaim a programme receives, it is the acclaim received in relation to the acclaim deserved. Therefore a film that wins an Oscar can be said to be underrated if the general consensus is that it should have received more. Likewise a obscure comedy watched by 100 people is not underrated if that is all it deserves.

 

Programmes like Gavin and Stacey on BBC3 do not get the exposure they deserve. Therefore - underrated.
