I think the pen was stuck to a piece of glass in front of the lens. As for the jogging scene the set is rotated and the actor always remains at the bottom.

I do believe thats true, the pen that is. The joggers a little obvious JB you giant thickie.

Just watched this earlier for the first time as it was on BBC 2 and it’s ya know a classic so thought I’d give it a go. I’ve seen a few Kubrick films this is just one I’d never got around to. It is shot beautifully and I enjoyed the bit with HAL murdering everyone, the designs of the space ships etc set to classical music. The whole monolith thing and what we choose to interpret as was a bit far out maybe trying too hard to be artsy. The ending was fucking bizarre although I think if you watched this film on acid back in the 60s when it came out it would’ve been mind blowing.

All in all I can appreciate some aspects of it but quite intellectually challenging. Some may even say pretentious. As so many critics have included at as one of the best films ever I was hoping I would enjoy it more. I think it might even demand more than one viewing to fully get on board with the rest of the fanboys.

The book "explains" the ending better.
