"Open the pod bay doors HAL"

"I'm sorry Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that".

It's how I imagine e-mail conversations between Usher and Momo to go:

"Stop being a mental cunt MOMO"

"I know I've made some very poor decisions recently, but I can give you my complete assurance that my posting will be back to normal"

"MOMO, I won't argue with you anymore! Stop being a mental cunt"

"I'm afraid. I'm afraid, Dave. Dave my mind is going. I can feel it. I can feel it. My mind is going"

Hahahaahaaa! Jesus that made me laugh.

Its a very good film, I have a few questions though.

a) What was the big metal slab?

b) Why did he go through that trippy scene at the end?

c) Whats the deal with him looking at himself in the future (at the end)?

It's an outstanding film. It's one of those films as well that lets you decide what things mean. It's been a few years since I watched it though, I should be able to find it cheap enough. Well worth watching if you never have done so before.

Even if the music makes me want to go WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOH at the top of my voice!

That's genius pure and simple.

It's pure art that story, the book and the film.

Its one of my personal favourites.

Hal 9000 one of the great sci-fi creations, childlike, pitiful, sinister and murderous.

Think I first watched it with my father when I was ten and did'nt understand anything I saw, just thought it looked great.

Did you know Patrick Moore was an uncredited music consultant on the film?

H - the next letter along is >>> I

A >>> B

L >>> M

Clever hey?

From wiki.

Although it is often conjectured that the name HAL was based on a one letter shift from the name IBM, this has been denied by both Clarke and 2001 director Stanley Kubrick. In 2010: Odyssey Two, Clarke speaks through the character of Dr. Chandra, who characterized this idea as: "utter nonsense! I thought that by now every intelligent person knew that H-A-L is derived from Heuristic ALgorithmic".

Them were the days, when each of the models of the spacecraft were actually hand made. They look far better and more realistic than any CGI nonsense that's followed. Plus I still have no idea how they did the gravity scenes (the jogging and the pen), considering how long ago it was.

Kubrick was just a genius. Inventing the steady cam for The Shining because there wasn't anything up to the job. That's proper pioneering. Such a shame he entrusted A.I. to Spielberg after researching it for 30 odd years because he knew his vision would be brought to life with integrity. Bet he was glad to be dead when that shite finally came out.
