Gutted that's the end of the series, I actually thought it was a shame they used so many clips & interviews from the earlier three episodes in the last one, obviously squeezing their moneys worth.

Hopefully a second series to come going on what Steve has said.

I've been checking out that Chris Dave boy as well, hadn't heard of him & have been blown away...

His stuff with Robert Glasper is amazing too.

Both the Trio (straight jazz) and Experiment (fusion of jazz, hip hop and r ‘n’ b) stuff.

Paul, I've been checking some stuff out on YouTube & I like what I hear but I'm struggling a bit with Chris Dave's discography, can you recommend any albums? Preferably on the jazz/instrumental side as opposed to the hip hop/vocal stuff.

Cheers.

For more straight trio Jazz check out the album ‘Double Booked’ by Robert Glasper.

More Bebop stuff is the album ‘Standard of Language’ by Kenny Garrett. He very much channels his inner Elvin Jones in places on this record so I have a feeling you’ll especially like this one.

Try and keep away from the Adele/Justin Bieber stuff he’s done though.....

Just catching up on “On Drums... Stewart Copeland” from BBC4 last night. Very enjoyable, as all their specialist music programming is. The little section on the musical relationship between John Coltrane and Elvin Jones was fascinating. I doubt such a thing exists, but I’d love to watch or read them talking about it themselves.

Loved Shiela E demonstrating the “simplicity” of funky beats, too.

I've not found anything from Coltrane or Elvin Jones discussing their musical relationship in any great depth. John McLaughlin & Billy Cobham had a similar one in the 70s (obviously based on the earlier group).

Looking forward to watching this when I get a chance, not a Police fan by any stretch but there's an argument to be made that Copeland was the last guy to really change things in drumming in popular music.

Speaking of funky beats, I only found out this week that JEFF BECK came up with the drum beat for Superstition by Stevie Wonder.  He was playing it and Stevie ran in the studio and said, "Keep going!" and put the moog bass over the top.

Well I did not know that...

Now I know no-one (especially on here) likes a smartarse, but I can't believe this guy's concert in Manchester hasn't sold out yet...

It's like a novelty act. He needs to get a band around him and concentrate on songwriting as he clearly has bags of talent. All the faffing around just detracts from it IMO.

Zack Danziger is worth checking out, one hell of an innovative player and apparently an inspration to Mark Guiliana.

Anyway, he does these WWF themed songs with a bassist and it’s actually bloody brilliant at times as they are clearly taking the piss and having a laugh but both brilliant players at the same time.

Worth following on Instagram if you’re on it.

Another drummer from a band I’ve been banging on about on this forum recently is Liam Kearley from Black Peaks.

Does some really nice linear playing from time to time.

Saw them live a few months ago and he’s unreal.

(skip to about 55 seconds for the drumming)
