I think he is talking out of his wrinkly old arse.

How tactically aware were Pele, Maradona, George Best, King Kenny, Cruyff?

Exactly.

In the case of Cruyff, more tactically aware than any player who has ever played the game. In his late 20's he was orchestrating the whole team whenever he played. Look at his managerial record, most great players don't become great managers. Cruyff broke the mould.

The Houllier article is about Houllier, not Gerrard. Its an attempt at self-glorification and self-justification.

When Houllier arrived he was introduced to Gerrard as someone who was about to be brought into the first team. For Houllier to claim credit for his development is typical Houllier crap.

The implication that Houllier then discovered and cured the cause of Gerrard's the physical problems is ridiculous, too. It was the medical staff who referred him to specialists in Europe.

Its true that Houllier then filled Gerrard's head with all sorts of nonsense about being the world's best and becoming LFC manager.

Houllier picked on Owen and Gerrard as his salvation. If he fashioned the team around these two he figured he would ride their coatails. He figured he would be seen as supporting local talent.

Then he made Gerrard captain solely on the basis he was a local.

Notice in his article how he relates all Owen and Gerrard successes as players at LFC and the national team to the time he was manager and how they both wanted to leave LFC when he did.

When Houllier was only too quick to knife Robbie Fowler whenever he could he kept quiet about all the trouble Gerrard was getting into off the field.

Owen's and Gerrard's attitudinal problems and inability to adapt to teamates are due in large part to Houllier's influence on them at a formative stage in their careers.

Sometimes he does try and take too much on himself, reckon that's because he's so fuckin gifted, he's pretty much great at everything, passing, running, tackling, shooting, crossing.

Sometimes that works against him because he's trying to take too much on, i reckon.

Wouldnt swap him for anyone tho.

This is one of the shittest post I have ever read.

I think they both have some truth in what they say.

Gerrard is a fantastic player but if i have one criticism it is that at times he can play with his heart and not his head particularly when the team is struggling. I think that is what Rafa was suggesting when he said he was playing with too much passion in the derby as he wanted it so much he was trying to do everything himself. The team then improved massively with the introduction of Lucas as we started playing as a team and stretching their ten men.

Having said that there is not one player in the world I would swap him for.

Guest Ulysses Everett McGill
I think it's a crock of shit myself.

How many goals does he both score and create? How many chances does he create?

If that's not servicing the team, then what the fuck is?

The one thing Gerrard has, is end product.

Gerrard IS end product mate, and I think that is where the root of any problem lies with him.

The stupid thing is, it's not a problem he can fix himself, its up to his team mates to take responsibilty off him, and it is up to him to let them.

Even when he isn't playing well he still seems to win the game on his own, which in itself isn't a problem, but when his teammates are happy for him to take that responsibility in order to hide thier own ineffieciences, that is when the collective suffers.

I'm not his biggest fan, but he has really impressed me this year, not so much his form, but his attitude, he seems to be growing up, and if he is to be a proper captain, he has to take his roy of the rovers hat off, and empower and encourage others to take the burden off him.

Maybe we do not have enough players who will instinctively step up, and if that is the case we need to look at players who will, sadly, winners don't come cheap.

The better players that Steven Gerrard has around him, the better he will become

For me to much is placed on him having too much heart and not enough tactically, the english league isnt so much about tactics its about heart and drive and nor would I swap him for anyone.

That's a great point. A lot of games in the Premiership are won with heart and passion as opposed to pure ability.

I think one of Rafa's greatest successes has been teaching Gerrard as he said "when to run" that he didn't have to go 100% all the time and sometimes you have to hide in the shadows to be effective. He's still a bit gung-ho at times, but his "game intelligence" has improved a hell of a lot over the last 4 years.

Sacchi hits nail on head. Sacchi a wise old fart.

We'd be better off with the £50M Gerrard would've generated. Yes, he has saved us with crucial goals more than once, but without him we probabaly wouldn't have needed those goals in the first place.

He has attracted the likes of Torres and Mascherano to the club though, both of them believing the hype of our "passionate" captain. For that I'm grateful.

What?

Gerrard is the type of player that feels that he needs to be involved in every passage of play. He is a natural athlete will always impose himself on a game.
