Cunts, worst thing is, the belt itself costs about £15, the rest will be time and labour to get the other engine parts out so they can get at it!

I hate mechanics with a passion. Especially when they pull 'that' face.

A conversation I once had:

Pleb: "How about I change all your tyres and make them nice and legal? £180 all in!"

Me: "There's nothing wrong with them, I had my MOT last week!"

Pleb: "They're not illegal as such, but it's up to you mate but just do me a favour and be careful on the roads with it."

Absolute cunt, do they think you were born ten minutes ago? This greasy twat is seriously worried about my road safety! FUCK OFF!

See if there are any VW specialists in your area there normally are being a popular type of vehicle, don't ring up go there in person so you can look at their set up and you always get a better price in person plus if they are a specialist they can put a stamp in the book and you can still buy the original t/belt from the dealer.

....Cheers for that advice mate. Its just comming up to 60k miles so l am going to get it changed definatley in the next month or so. l suppose its a case of shopping around, but l appreciate what you are saying about turning up in person and having a look at their set up etc, as its a job that you would hope to be done with care, correct tools etc.

I used to be a mechanic and I reckon you'd be best at a smaller, independent garage. They're more dependent on reputation and word of mouth and won't try and fleece you like the bigger ones.

I know it's not relevant here but just to show what I mean; all major companies have policies whereby certain diagnoses are given depending on what parts haven't sold well recently. One very, very large breakdown company shifts so many batteries just because people trust the name. I can't remember the exact figures but it's criminal.

Another mechanic I used to work with went to one place (very well known that you can't get much quicker than) as he didn't have a ramp at his disposal. He was told that on top of the job he needed new shock-absorbers as his were weeping. He smelt said weepage and it turned out the twat had sprayed WD40 on them when his back was turned. My mate obviously had a go and the bloke confessed that this month was shock absorber month.

All of the above is, naturally, allegedly only.

Mechanics are just arseholes by and large, they're not to be trusted unless you're related to or went to school with them, it's as simple as that.

The day someone invents a reliable, fool-proof and pocket sized lie detector is the day 90% of garages go out of business.

2003 VW Sharan TDI Sport.............quote was from a VW main dealer.

My wife just had to pay NZ$1046 (about £420) for her 2002 VW Polo's cam belt and tensioners. We shopped about a bit and was told the same by everyone – they basically have to disassemble the engines in newer VW's to get at the bits they need to get it replaced. There's also quite a bit of arsing about with 2 separate tensioners and other little bits and pieces, so you're probably not getting ripped off. It's a lot cheaper than the belt snapping while you're driving along!
