I'm not that into Star Trek but that could end up being so bad, it'll be funny.

It's a franchise that inspired generations of nasa scientists, which Steven hawking asked if he could visit, had Shakespearian actors in Its ranks and was watched by Martin Luther King, now it's like Beverly Hills 90210 if it was made by channel 5.

The way some of these franchises have been ruined is mind blowing.

That Star Trek is long gone.  They saw a gap in the market they could fill with a show that had Star Trek in the title and went ahead and filled it.  Just like Star Wars, Trek is now being milked until the cow is dry.  Sometimes less is more.

A lot of it is still enjoyable (SNW/LD) but gone are the days when they consulted with NASA etc to get the science right.  As long as there are big explosions (In space) and lots of battles a quick witted quips it's all good to them.  And yes I am an old fart!

I think it's interesting in a sense in how it speaks to where wider society has gone.

These shows are written by millennials/gen z and look at the contrast in how the characters behave.

You have the original Star Trek, a quasi military organisation where stoicism, rules and duty abide. Scenes like Kirk trying to hold it in at Spock's funeral.

Then you have Burnham. Whose entire character is about never abiding by rules as long as she "gets shit done". Crying a lot, hugging a lot. Character who - when ordered to do something by a superior - say stuff like "okay get off my ass!". Or who respond to flying a shuttle through a storm with "woohoo, this is cool!".

It's odd though as I still think that market for a more serious, meaningful show about space and exploration is still there. Not everyone loves dumb.

I watch some of the Critical Drinker Youtube reviews. They're entertaining, but he does go overboard on the DEI/ woke thing from time to time. I can't find the particular video I was thinking of, but he says pretty much the same thing and illustrates it with examples from the original movies shown in comparison with the new hyperactive stuff. I'll see if I can dig it out, but he has done quite a few Star Trek critiques.

Yeah I think I've seen that too mate.

Abrams kicked it off with making it more Star Wars esque, he actually says in an interview he never liked Star Trek. Alex Kurtsman is from his team on the films.

What gets me about the modern trek is the general lack of care. There's episodes of discovery where they're literally based on a piece of footage from the next generation.

The likes of next gen and deep space nine had people going over the fx, sets and script religiously until everything was nailed down and perfect. An absolute labour of love.

The whole of the last season of Discovery  was based on that one TNG episode "The Chase".

Space, Above & Beyond was ace.

Babylon 5 is on my watch list.

It's amazing babylon 5. First series is gash, but once Bruce Boxleitner (Tron) comes into it it takes off. There's always been a big debate over whether DS9 ripped off a lot of its ideas (interstellar war, secret police inside Earth etc).

It also foretold the rise of Trump style politicians on Earth.

Vic Fontaine has sadly passed away.

James Darren was a great singer, his version of “All the way” is such a brilliant track.

The scenes with Worf and also Nog in DS9 and them coming to terms with loss and PTSD respectively were great episodes. so was their heist episode, never quite understood how he was in the mirror universe though considering he was a hologram.

Still fucking ridiculously good on every level this.

Aside from that entire two-parter being great, the biggest thing that video makes me realise is just how badly we needed the remaster. To compare shots, the top is from that video and the bottom from the remaster.
