I'd say he was a ladies man or a 'leading man' I suppose, but he's very different to how he's depicted in the Abrams films.

 

He was  a company man, he was a bookworm in his academy days by all accounts and a stickler for the rules. 

 

Pike is much more affable, self assured, typical American hero type with no real demons in his closet. Kirk wouldn't say something like 'let's have some fun along the way'. He'd have just grabbed Spock and said 'damn it Spock I need you!' Then given Burnham loads of shit for being mean to Spock.

 

Kirk is a much more complex guy IMO. He has a lot of demons in the films, especially about being put behind his desk and getting older.

Episode 2. Very ‘Trek’, good amount of story and tension building. Not a hugely flashy episode but that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

Still can't believe some people slag it off. The Abrams films get a lot of stick for abandoning Trek's core themes but Discovery has them in spades.

Many of the haters (TOS die hards, quite often) are coming around to this season. Some just hate it and don’t watch it, so reality doesn’t matter to them. Twats.
