I couldn't help but think that I had no idea if he was guilty or innocent, so I couldn't root for him. I mean, his brother called him from Bin Laden's phone....that's in the 'maybe' pile for me.

Sure, I understand the premise and the outrage, but we're only outraged because we're made to think he's innocent.  And why did he delete everything in his phone before?

I too cared about his possible guilt, but that faded to almost total insignificance. Not because I was made to believe he was innocent, but against the backdrop of the utter disgrace that was Guantanamo. Not just America but we too have blood on our hands in that regard; we stood by.

Five convictions out of the 700+ incarcerated there?

Sound of Metal - 8/10. Really powerful drama about a drummer who goes rapidly deaf. You can see why Riz Ahmed and the film itself got the big Oscar nominations.

Haven’t seen it yet but hopefully it means more drummers (or even musicians) see the importance of using hearing protection.

Something that’s criminally under thought / promoted in the community.

Looking forward to checking it out.

Love & Mercy 8/10

Avalible on BBC iPlayer for the next 6 days this film charts the life of Brian Wilson and his mental health issues, deeply diving into psychosis throughout the decades and his time from The Beach Boys.

Paul Dano plays a version of him from the 1960’s (and does a really great job) and John Cusack portrays him in the 1980’s. Paul Giamatti plays his controlling therapist Dr. Eugene Landy. Elizabeth Banks plays Melinda Wilson.

It shifts around between the two decades but I really enjoyed it as I learned a lot. Glad I stumbled across it.

The Pet Sounds recording scenes are something else. I loved that film.

Good wasn’t it, covered both the man and the music almost equally.

Gave props to the session musicians also and some

troubles / tensions within the band, whilst focusing on Brian’s story.

Really good film. Paul Dano was especially great.

I think Dano stole the show a bit although I never liked John Cusack until I saw that film & I have a new found respect for him, so he wasn't bad either.

I went to see it at the pictures so the music sounded especially great, I'll need to give it another watch.

He's great in 1408 as well and I don't like horrors.

The Man Who Knew Infinity

Enjoyable true story of an impoverished Indian lad who just happens to be a mathematical savant.

Jeremy Irons and the lad from Slumdog star, enjoyable but lightweight, let down by a weak script.

6/10

Palm Springs

Enjoyable romcom fluff, not a patch on Groundhog Day and nowhere near as good as some of the scores I've seen you lot bandying about.

6.5/10

On The Rocks

Rashida Jones suspects her hubby's having an affair and enlists the help of her worldly wise father...Bill Murray.

Murray is typically brilliant in this, sweet dad - daughter buddy movie, he just gets better and better with age, truly an outstanding actor, I found myself laughing out loud and really enjoying this charming little film.

Sophia Coppola directs. It's not Lost In Translation but On The Rocks is very good.

7.5/10

Molly’s Game - 7/10. An Aaron Sorkin scripted biopic of the former Olympic-standard skier who ran high stakes poker games and was charged by the FBI in a RICO case. Jessica Chastain (in totally mint condition) stars. I thought it was a decent, entertaining drama.

Sideways - 7.5/10. Not seen this for a few years but it still holds up. Paul Giamatti (uptight failed writer and wine nerd) and Thomas Hayden Church (man-child actor and inveterate shagger) play a couple of old friends on a lads’ week away round the vineyards of California before the latter’s wedding. Funny and touching.

Antoinette in the Cevennes

Antoinette, kooky teacher, follows her lover, his wife and daughter (who she teaches) on a trip following in Robert Louis Stevenson’s footsteps with a donkey in the French countryside (the Cevennes region of the title).

She learns a lesson or two, makes friends with the donkey, and the countryside is pure French tourism porn. Mildly entertaining. 6/10

Saw this at Pentridge Prison cinema on a date with the missus.

Girl on a Train - Netflix - 7.5/10

This is pretty decent. I like Emily Blunt anyway and she plays a troubled alcoholic really well. Good twists in it and a few really good acting performances from Emily Blunt and Haley Bennett.

It's also got Rebecca Ferguson in it whose a favourite of mine.....

They allow prisoners to watch films in jail now? Talk about cushy. With the prices they charge for sweets and stuff its the right place for those sellers.

The Palestinian film the Present just won the short movie prize at the Baftas, might put a few noses out of joint

Watched this and found it to be revealing, touching and incredibly angering. We know about these checkpoints but this film shows how the simple, everyday occurring routine of a family celebration can be absolutely destroyed by people without humanity or morals exercising their evil control.

Pretty good for a first time director. 9/10
