No Time To Die.

 

Things I didn’t like -

 

* Malik’s villain. Certainly not as memorable as Le Chriffe or Silva. 
* The extra emotional blackmail of his daughter. It would have been emotional enough. 
* Definitely sags in the middle. 
 

Things I did like -

 

* Pretty much everything else.
* Ana de Armas is an absolutely phenomenal looking female. 
* How each Craig film has escalated the stakes. Even as somebody who can only say he’s a passing Bond fan, it’s easy to forget that pre-Casino Royale, the franchise was at it’s lowest point. If this film had come out in the Bourne, Bauer & Batman Begin phase (ie harder) it’d likely have been mercilessly mocked. The films escalated to this crescendo. 
 

I’d watched all 4 previous Craig Bonds before this. I think QoS was quite a bit better than I remembered and Spectre wasn’t as boring. I’d rate this in the middle

of the 5.

Out of the Past

The Killing

 

Two straight up noir classics, though completely different movies.

 

Mitchum, Kirk Douglas and Jane Greer in the first, Sterling Hayden and an ensemble in the latter.

 

An excellent choice for a double-feature.

Went to the Everyman in harrogate last night to see The Last Duel.

 

was listening to kermode and Mayo’s film review on radio 5 on the drive there, and they reviewed this one as we drove into the town, and all the positive things kermode said about it were true, and the things he didn’t like I didn’t notice.

 

I thought it was great. Wasn’t overly sold on Affleck’s character to be honest, but otherwise it was really good. 2.5 hours flew by and Jodie Comer was brilliant.

 

it was a little disappointing that at no point did anyone drop in a “what, like the back of a Volkswagen?” line, given the writers and subject matter.

 

overall I thoroughly enjoyed it, and thought the repetition from 3 viewpoints was well done.

No Time To Die , really enjoyed it and a good way for Craig to finish his Bond shift…I’d still say Casino Royale is his best but I’d put this as just below that one

Oh and if you get to watch then stick around for the end credits as the soundtrack then is a million times better than the opening one. Don’t know what’s happened to the Bond them songs but since Chris Cornell’s “I Know Your Name” they’ve gone utter shite and all sound drearily the same and instantly forgettable .

It’s a shame as they used to have some brilliant and memorable ones like Goldfinger, OHMSS, Diamonds Are Forever, Live and Let Die and numerous others .

It's incredible that radiohead had a song pulled from a James bond film and then Adele plus Sam Smith recorded one each. They were terrible records and simply released to hype the film and make money. They used to be signature tracks that suited the film.

No Time To Die - 8.5/10

 

Absolutely brilliant. When he starts mowing the baddies down from his Aston Martin while doing donuts you just know you're watching a proper bond. Lots of throwbacks to classic bonds. The scene when he visits Blofeld in prison and you're waiting for him to come up that tunnel was electric. Just shy of Casino Royale and Skyfall for me but still great. I would have liked to have seen more of Ana De Almas but Lea Seydoux was worthy of the extra screen time.

 

Nice one Daniel Craig you were great. I hope the next Bond's a red and all.

The only sense of humour Adele has ever shown is singing Skyfall in the style of Vic Reeves' pub singer.

No Time to Die - Disappointingly rubbish and feels like I watched a different film to everyone else - 4\10

[Total Longo]

Black Widow. Watched with no real context having seen precious few Marvel films, it was my son's choice. I nodded off near the end. Not the worst thing i've ever seen but i will have forgotten about it in a week. 5/10

 

The Many Saints of Newark. It's abject mediocrity just made me realise just how brilliant The Sopranos really was. It just felt like a film that really didn't need to be made. The Dickie Moltisanti character was just boring as were the majority of the underdeveloped characters. Literally the only good thing about it was the origins of Silvio's wig.  4/10

Venom: Let There Be Carnage - 6/10

 

The Hardy/Venom combo is brilliant but much like the first movie, it was poorly edited with a poor finale. I love Woody Harrelson but wasn't keen on him on this. Stephen Graham's accent was shocking as well.

 

Halloween Kills - 0/10

 

Absolute shite. One of the worst movies I've ever seen.

Dune - good but unsatisfying.

 

Typical Denis Villeneuve so if you're not a fan of amazing cinematography, lots of dialogue and slow pace scenes it's not going to be for you.

 

The fact both parts were not filmed at the same time and, as far as I'm aware, the second part hasn't started filming makes me worry that we might never see it.

 

6/10 (for now).

Might be a bit too expensive for a TV series and they call this Dune Part One in the title card so my assumption is the second part is going to be a film.

 

Also I saw this in regular 2d and some parts at night were ridiculously dark to the point of not being able to see anything (one part towards the end mainly) it might have just been cineworld being shit but given IMAX is naturally darker I'd be surprised if people can see anything if they watch it in that format.

There's definitely a TV series in production and I'm sure the movie was a scene setter for it. I'll check it out.

Looks like it's a spin off called Dune: The Sisterhood, It's a prequel based on the Bene Gesserit from the film/book.

 

Looks like Villeneuve is waiting for the ok from Warner Bro's to begin production on the second film.

The Night House - newly widowed woman learns some disturbing things about her former husband. Solid mystery/thriller. 8/10

 

Old Henry - good western with a satisfying surprise toward the end. Tim Blake Nelson is brilliant in it, as is the Dorff, whose late career resurgence I'm very much enjoying. 9/10

 

Dune - standard Villeneuve fare, although not up there with his best, imo. I know nothing of the book, but got the impression a lot was left out here, with the plotting feeling a bit rushed. Maybe the source material would lend itself better to TV format? Defo worth a watch, tho. 8.5/10

Old Henry

 

Never even heard of this until reading Duff Man's review 2 hours ago, what a cracking film.

 

Part Jesse James, part Unforgiven, Old Henry is a beautiful looking and sounding film with some excellent casting and acting. Loved the twist / reveal too.
