What Happened To Monday.

Rapace what's her name off of Prometheus in a decent action flick that did not get any attention at all. Willem Defoe and Glenn Close costar. Much better than expected but story is a bit weird.

7.5/10

Blue Story - London gang film along the same path as Top Boy. Not as good as Top Boy/Kidulthood etc for rawness but worth a watch. 6.5/10 Really depressing life a lot of them young lads get brought up in on them estates. Society is fucked.

15:17 to Paris - True story of the American lads who stopped the terrorist attack on the train to Paris. Clint Eastwood directs it and uses the same 3 lads as the actors. I didn't know that until the end and was genuinely shocked at how bad the acting was but knowing it was them it changed my view. Its a true-story of something horrific by people that were actually there so its harsh to mark it down too much. Worth a watch as well. 6.5,10.

Blue story was quite good.

15:17 to Paris was pretty abysmal but I'm glad the blokes got some well deserved coin out if it.

Any Given Sunday - 7/10. This is a frustrating watch. It’s got loads of great actors, a sure-fire genre and plenty of good moments. However, it falls some way short because of its direction, in my view. Oliver Stone is just far too fucking busy in every way with this. Whether it’s his use of constant music, the exaggerated pathetic fallacy of storms and torrential rain, the inter-cutting of historic film stock or just its general garishness, the whole thing is far too fucking loud. On one level that works for American Football, but it’s even less subtle than the sacking of a quarterback. Could’ve been a 9 or even 10/10 film in more nuanced hands; probably even should’ve been.

It's too long too. Agree with the rest.

Rebecca - The new version from Ben Wheatley. It was okay, I found it lacking in tension or mystery for nearly all of the running time and as a result it made the story feel a bit thin. In fact, anyone watching this without seeing the Hitchcock version, or knowing the high regard the story is held in, might wonder what the fuss is about. If you do know the Hitchcock version then this is a poor cipher. I'm surprised Wheatley made it as it's unlike anything he's made previously and he doesn't really add his own stamp to it. It looks nice, Armie Hammer is good and Lily James (the dirty get) is fine up until the final act when the character takes a more modern approach to things. 5 out of 10

Nah I think it’s a superb film. Visually great as well considering it’s nearly 20 years old.

The Trial of the Chicago 7 - 7/10. Standard Sorkin fare: heavy on the dialogue and liberal politics; short on anything resembling a rounded female character. The story itself is incredible and a timely reminder that attempts to subvert democracy by the state are not a new phenomenon.

I watched Borat last night with a load of red wine and it made me laugh a few times. I give it a definitely more than 1 out of 10.

I thought was ok, watched it sober. Pretty much a poorer remake of the original.

It the judge actually acted like it was shown then the myth of an independent judiciary was laid bare as a complete falsehood and very worrying in a so called democracy, basically guilty before the trial started.

I don't know enough about the case to know how accurate it all was.

I would also give it 7/10, I enjoy courtroom films, basically 90% of the film is in court.

Borat Subsequent Moviefilm - Follow up to the 14 year old Borat and you can feel both the character and the method creaking heavily under the age and notoriety of the character. The use of his daughter to do the heavy lifting with the interviews does kind of work but it can't escape the age of the concept. In the end the whole thing feels quite safe in comparison to more modern comedy. It had a few funny bits and I came away thinking a more heavily scripted story would have served the character better but then Sacha Baron Cohen's comedy has never translated well into that field either. Okay but didn't really have any business being made now. 4 out of 10.

I watched this a few days ago and thought it merely alright.

The attempts to insert comedy really detracted from what could have been an excellent film. It was also half an hour too long and Baron Cohen's accent was flipping awful.

The Bourne Legacy - 9/10. This is chronically underrated, in my view, and often dismissed just because Damon isn’t in it. It also gets criticised for the conceit of the chems/viralling out thing. However, it doesn’t take much of a suspension of disbelief to buy into that and once you do the film is fantastic. It fits seamlessly into the existing world of Jason Bourne and yet also feels true to itself.

The pacing is brilliant and I really like the narrative too. The final big chase scene which extends across 25 minutes, is superb. The casting is boss as well. In fact I’d go as far as to say I prefer this to at least two of the other four Bourne movies.

I actually turned it off halfway through, just bored me to be honest, I dunno if that brand of comedy has had its day or if it was just a bad film.
