I used to thoroughly enjoy a really good horror movie but I find the anxiety produced by them very hard to handle these days. However I have found out about two Japanese horror movies that I am determined to try my best to watch. If I manage to watch them, I will report my findings in due course.

If you have seen either of the following movies, I would be interested to know of your experience of them...This first one seems to have an enormous reputation...

Audition...

The second is quite old now and it appears to be available on youtube even so perhaps being so dated it's not so scary...

Onibaba...

Onibaba - want to see this. It is on Kermode's top ten films that scared him. Also William Friedkin, Exocist director, claimed that this movie scared him.

I've only seen Audition, which is a difficult watch, but absolutely fantastic. What is about horror films that gives you anxiety though? If it's just jump scares, then you'll be OK, but if it's atmosphere or gore, then you're probably going to struggle with Audition.

Jump scares with constant false build ups cause lots of anxiety. Gore and atmosphere are great so I think I'll give Audition a go today.

Not a fan of horror films, I think most of them are utter shite tbh. Much prefer the old stuff though, The Exorcist, The Omen, Alien, all brilliant films.

Of the more modern horror films, the only one which truly made a mark was Martyrs, which I think is fantastic.

Japanese horror has a style of it's own. Films like the ring, the grudge in their original form are really good. The Hollywood remakes pitch the great idea with a bunch of privileged yanks with predictable results.

I assume you mean the 2008 version of Martyrs? It looks like it was remade in 2015.

Cool, I think you'll enjoy it then. I hate jump scares too, and found this site pretty helpful- https://wheresthejump.com. You can also hide the description of the scenes so you don't get spoiled.

Not an outright horror, but Miike's Ichi the Killer is also a really good film, and extremely violent and gory.

*shudder* Martyrs stayed with me for weeks after watching it. Probably the most disturbing film I've ever seen.

Gore for the sake of it is horrible. Cant stand it. Films like Saw and Hostel can fuck off.

Moody ones though, proper psychological horrors are great. Well they aren't 'great' but thats what makes them great.

Audition is great, I remember when I watched it that it was my second foreign horror film after Ring, two completely different types of films but yeah, Audition is very good. Set me off on a path to find more..

I recall watching a bit of Onibaba but never finished it some whatever reason, I don't think it was lack of interest, need to check it out again sometime.

For moody psychological horror check out Session 9. Great little known film.

Audition. I don't think @Bjornebye would like this very much. However, I did like it a fair bit, even though it's very weird. Very much a cut and shut movie though, the first two thirds I was wondering if Hugh Grant was going to make an appearance. 8/10.

Right so the Lord of the Rings Trilogy.

Her birthday today so we've watched one a day since Sunday because she loves them.

Fellowship of the Ring - 8.5/10.

Thought I'd seen this before but I met have paid much attention. Much better than I expected. Not normally my type of stuff but you embrace it for what it is. Set it up nicely.

Two Towers - 9.5/10

Fuck me. Superb movie. The battle scene was great and I enjoyed it all except for the talking trees.

Return of the King - 9/10

Another superb battle scene. Dragged on too much at the end but still , fantastic viewing.

What did I learn from all this? Frodo is a proper little shitbag. Sam was the real hero.

Yeah I'll give that one a miss pal. Cheers for the heads up

Five recent horror films I enjoyed:

Let the Right One In

The Last Exorcism

Kill List

The Babadook

The Witch

I note that all won the Empire Award for Best Horror, which is entirely coincidental.

Enjoyed The Witch, Black Philip was ace.

Was Let The Right One In the Swedish film? If so, that was superb.
