Just Mercy

Jamie Foxxxxxxx stars as a black man (wrongly?) convicted of murder and facing the death penalty in Shittsville, Alabama.

Based upon a true story, Foxxxxxxxxxx is decent and it's an enjoyable film but this sort of thing has been done so many times before and so much better too.

6/10 Fen Kodi

I would have thought Jamie Foxxxx was a natural choice to play a black man.

1917. Really entertaining. Very very enjoyable. But I'm afraid it's only getting 7.5/10 from me.

Explanatory possible spoiler below...

A little bit too Hollywood for my liking. No need for this one unbroken shot thing. No need for Rambo-esque car-chase type scenes of a million bullets missing their target, dodging artillery, going over waterfalls, etc. etc. etc.

Terminator. Dark fate.

My fucking word it was truly awful. Can't believe Cameron had anything to do with it

I can. When was the last time he made a decent film?

True Lies in 1994 which I rather liked.

He has made a lot of "wosh" movies. That is wow coupled with shit. The technical innovations and look of them are "wow" but the plot and dialogue are shit. So they seem wow when you see them but any analysis or reflections make you realise that they are seriously shit movies. Amongst these are

The Abyss

Titanic

Avatar

And Terminator 2 is not that great either apart from the new use of CGI and the great bad guy

I didn't realise that he wrote the screenplay for Rambo : First Blood Part II. So he even fucked that up

Richard Jewell. 7/10. Timely reminder of how an innocent person’s life can be destroyed by an investigation fixated on the wrong starting premise, and a sensationalist media happily working hand in hand with them. Always follow the evidence.

Thank fuck it wasn't just me who thought that.

Quite ironic too the use of the word wosh as I feel it describes the post perfectly.

Booksmart 7/10.

Direct by the gorgeous Olivia Wilde, basically girls do a Superbad movie of going to various parties before they go to college.

It’s good. It’s funny and has heart, just not as OTT as the films it’s obviously based on. I’d recommend it, it’s definitely enjoyable.

If you fancy a recent horror film, The Lighthouse, Midsommar and Mandy might scratch that itch.

I watched Midsommar in the end. Not entirely sure what to make of it, at places it felt more like a gory comedy than a revenge horror and was a bit risible at parts with all the howling and fucking. Beautifully shot though, all shades of gold and white (and red later on), the depiction of the trip when they first get to the commune is pitch perfect and it had some shocking imagery. The ending is superb too.

The ending was actually uplifting rather than horrifying- Dani has the empathetic family she's been looking for, she finally sees her boyfriend for the asshole he is and condemns him to burn and his shallow, tosspot friends are deservedly dispatched. I also liked the conceit of the educated white man exploring and patronising the primitive native's rituals being flipped on its head with the black PhD student and the white European tribe.

7.5/10 for the experience.
