I watched this on a plane last month and thought it utter shite, and I love a good b/w film, hence selecting it to watch.

The end did make me laugh, the police randomly shoot at a merry go round full of kids and kill the old man operating it. It all crashes and god knows how many people are injured or killed but no problem, it's all good at the end because the baddie died.

One of Hitchcock's worst films IMO, which considering he was brilliant is not exactly an insult.

This guy gets it.

The murder of Guy's wife is also done well, although it is here where things get murky...how did he follow them for an hour without the other two men noticing him? After that, the premise falls apart completely. How could Guy not go to the police immediately? Why didn't he go after Bruno sent the evidence to his house? Why didn't the cops ask the man running the Tunnel Of Love about Guy, or anyone else for that matter? Why did the whole expected frame of Guy depend on his lighter being taken to the exact place? And finally, why the hell would a police officer SHOOT DIRECTLY INTO A CHILDREN'S RIDE AND KILL THE OPERATOR! Which led to the inevitable deus ex machina with Bruno being killed as the calliope fell to the ground, holding the incriminating cigarette lighter...

As I said, the setup was perfect, and I will admit Bruno is one of the most disturbing characters I've seen on film (as Guy is perhaps the stupidest), but the second and third acts were so bad, it couldn't make up for a great beginning.

You forgot  the little old albert steptoe fella who has to crawl under the merry go round at the end to try and stop it. Then pulls the lever causing mayhem. Hilarious! Come on it’s Alfred Hitchcock. The Birds? Psycho? A lot of his films have ridiculous plots. Still enjoyable though.

Instant Family - Comedy with Rose Byrne and Mark Wahlberg as a couple who adopt 3 children and the hilarity that ensues. It was much better than you'd thought it'd be although it does nothing groundbreaking either. 7 out of 10

Long Shot - Seth Rogen is a journalist who becomes speech writer for his childhood babysitter who is now Secretary of State and played by Charlize Theron. Rogen does his usual schtick but Theron is quite good, it was too long (2 hours) and a lot rests on whether you buy them as a possible romantic relationship but it was fine. 6 out of 10

1917 - Sam Mendes WWI movie that's designed to look like one long take. Technically impressive, it felt slightly like a video game in that it lulls the action before the next set-piece, but it was enjoyable throughout with a good performance from George Mackay. The story is very flimsy but it's only an excuse to propel the film through it's numerous set-pieces in different settings. Clever. 8.5 out of 10

I think I’ve seen that one , Leonardo Di Caprio’s in it

Yes, he plays a tomato called Tim. Tim Tomato. Whenever he is called, people gasp and ask for Fresh Prince Tomato.

The Cat and the Canary

Bob Hope, a creepy old mansion, a killer on the loose, what more do you want? Dunno why but I've always loved the set up of this type of film, family arriving for the reading of a will, a picture where the eyes move, secret passages etc. Good stuff.

7.5/10

Just watched this thanks to your review, completely agree with everything you say too.

Prometheus 8/10. Enjoyed it on it's first release and still enjoyed it having watched it again. I hope they make a Prometheus 2 as I assume Alien Covenant was not a direct sequel but a prequel to the Alien movies?

Also re-watched the...

Director's Cut of Alien - 10/10

Director's Cut of Aliens 9.7/10

Assembly Cut of Alien 3 8/10

Alien Resurrection 5/10

I thought Prometheus looked the business, but had some huge potholes and ridiculous character decisions (such as the expert geologists getting lost, people putting their hands in alien gunk, were there no health and safety procedures after spending billions of dollars and travelling millions of miles??).

Alien Covenant was a decent romp but essentially a remake of Prometheus.

Noomi Rapace looks nice in a tight space suit. That was the best bit.

As much as I loved Aliens, part of me wishes they'd just left it at Alien and not turned it into a franchise.

I read an article about the third movie and I think to a certain extent this film is where the troubles began. There were lots of production problems with script rewrites simply because they didn't know how to take the series on. The reason being that the young girl in Aliens (Newt) decided not to pursue a career in acting and went on to become a teacher! So they couldn't decide for sure how to continue the series without her. So they decided to kill her off, which is a real shame. And the actor who played the guy on the ship who also died (Biehn think?) flatly refused to allow any references to him as he was extremely upset at being killed off. He did however allow the use of a single photo which I think was in the third film.

I think the third film is pretty good but it's just so hard to come to terms with how an alien egg got on board the ship. That leap of faith just carried on happening throughout the films. I enjoyed them all but they certainly could and should have been a lot better after Aliens. Alien Resurrection is just horrible.

Pretty much sums up my view of Prometheus. Proper sci-fi porn to look at, but the crew are pure Chuckle Brothers in space. Hard to believe given the production values anyone signed off on that script.

If you watch the end credits all the way through on Aliens there is a sound of an alien egg hatching, while they're on the ship (the Sulaco?)

Really? I will have to find that!

I'm not sure what the current position is but I just read that although Ridley Scott has cancelled development on the Alien movies, James Cameron has started working with Neil Blomkamp on the previously cancelled Alien movie he was going to direct.

I think Ridley Scott is a fucking chancer. He struck gold and caught lightning in a bottle with Alien, the script was already written and Geiger was already onboard, and my personal opinion of Bladerunner is that it's a Kubrick inspired visual feast but an otherwise faithful version of Dick's novel.

Pretty much everything else the fella has done has been muck.

I rather like BlackHawk Down and American Gangster but a lot of his stuff is all style of substance like Gladiator

Yep, maybe he has made some muck but he's got a half decent body of work there. I wonder how much the influence the studios had in making the following Alien movies, after all I don't think he was involved in any of the direct sequels.

There were both shite and bombed at the box office. All future alien movies were cancelled including Alien 5 by Blomkamp.

Covenant should have been called Prometheus 2 but I guess they'd rather associate it with the successful Alien franchise and not what is seen as a bit of a turkey.

Blomkamp has been treading water for a while now. Ten years since District 9. Everything since has been so-so in my opinion anyway.
