Ridley Scott is working on a new alien film, a trailer for Alien Awakening is on YouTube apparently.

The Sweeney - 3/10. I hope Hayley Atwell got a bumper payday for allowing a fat, sweaty Ray Winston clamber all over her. Embarrassing those scenes made it into the final edit. When Plan B is the best thing about your film you know you’re in trouble.

JoJo Rabbit

 

Not nearly as big of a fan of Waititi as most of you seem to be, I think the bloke's films are very hit and miss tbh (completely agree with Dougie's last review of WWDITS for example), but JoJo Rabbit is quite easily the best film he's ever made.

 

Very topical, extremely poignant, it looks wonderful and packs several real emotional punches, JoJo Rabbit is just a fantastic movie.

 

I've always found that Waititi's films are reminiscent of Wes Anderson; the framing, the camera movement and editing, just a bit quirky and skewed, all of which I'm a fan of. JoJo Rabbit is as good as anything Wes Anderson has ever done.

 

9/10 fantastic and will watch again.

Beware The Slenderman - 6.5/10. 
 

HBO documentary about the Slenderman stabbing in 2014. The victim’s parents clearly didn’t want to be involved but the parents of the two girls who stabbed the third did. It’s actually quite a sympathetic portrayal of the effects on the families and uses footage from the girls’ interviews and the preliminary hearing to determine if the trial should be in adult or juvenile court. Feels unfinished as it was shot before the actual trial, but opens up a lot of questions about how we should treat people with identifiable mental health conditions in the criminal justice system.

Strangers On A Train. Classic Hitchcock film. Was on telly last night and I ended up watching even though I’d seen it years ago. 9/10. You sometimes forget how good some of these old black and white films are with all the Netflix options. The lead character is a great understated menacing psychopath.

Terminator : Dark Fate

 

Amazingly I really enjoyed this, easily the best one since the 2nd Terminator film.

 

It certainly retreads old ground but the set pieces are good and the explosions are big and loud.

Bob Hope, a creepy old mansion, a killer on the loose, what more do you want? Dunno why but I've always loved the set up of this type of film, family arriving for the reading of a will, a picture where the eyes move, secret passages etc. Good stuff.

I watched this on a plane last month and thought it utter shite, and I love a good b/w film, hence selecting it to watch. 

 

The end did make me laugh, the police randomly shoot at a merry go round full of kids and kill the old man operating it. It all crashes and god knows how many people are injured or killed but no problem, it's all good at the end because the baddie died. 

 

One of Hitchcock's worst films IMO, which considering he was brilliant is not exactly an insult. 

 

This guy gets it.

 

The murder of Guy's wife is also done well, although it is here where things get murky...how did he follow them for an hour without the other two men noticing him? After that, the premise falls apart completely. How could Guy not go to the police immediately? Why didn't he go after Bruno sent the evidence to his house? Why didn't the cops ask the man running the Tunnel Of Love about Guy, or anyone else for that matter? Why did the whole expected frame of Guy depend on his lighter being taken to the exact place? And finally, why the hell would a police officer SHOOT DIRECTLY INTO A CHILDREN'S RIDE AND KILL THE OPERATOR! Which led to the inevitable deus ex machina with Bruno being killed as the calliope fell to the ground, holding the incriminating cigarette lighter...

As I said, the setup was perfect, and I will admit Bruno is one of the most disturbing characters I've seen on film (as Guy is perhaps the stupidest), but the second and third acts were so bad, it couldn't make up for a great beginning.

The Lighthouse- doesnt make any sort of sense plot wise, but Willem Dafoe going bonkers is always entertaining- 7.5/10

It's rocky in places, and does go round in circles a bit, but I found it quite illuminating.
