Watched 'Super' the other night. Great to see Liv Tyler in a fillum - she's spectacular. Anyway, that she and Kevin Bacon as the baddie were the best and most convincing thing in the film says everything. The film could't decide what it was going to be, or whose side it was actually on. Yeah, the protagonist was a dork who did it mostly out of pure badness (which was a good point to make after watching 'Kick Ass' and 'Superhero'). For me the film tried to be too many things at once - overthought and really just a string of set-pieces crow-barred together. Finally, I'm gonna say it: Ellen Page - fit though she is - gets right on my fucking tits. Couldn't wait for this film to end and when it did, I honestly wanted Kevin Bacon to prevail and rescue this over-wrought and incoherent film from itself. While I'm at it - what is it about Hollywood script-writing these days that makes potentially very good films so clunky and heavy-handed in it's use of dialogue)?

So;

Super: 6.25/10

(Thanks mostly to the presence of 'old-hands' Tyler and Bacon)

Yeh, I saw that too.

Knew nowt at all about it, it has elements of Cloverfield, King Kong, Rambo 3, and perhaps even Predator and The Motorcycle Diaries (!).

A fascinating "monster movie" that skips along almost devoid of any horror and tension, yet strangely captivating nonetheless.

Very well shot, I enjoyed this road movie with a twist.

7.5 big green bastards outta 10

Out of the films you mention I've only seen The Motorcycle Diaries and, if memory serves, I can see similarities in the way the films look (is that cinematography!? Not sure! Lol) and maybe in pacing.

Yeah I agree that its captivating despite the lack of tension, I'll be very interested to see what the film-maker (I think his name is Gareth Edwards) makes next.

The Guard

Very impressive little independent irish crime comedy full of black humour and the best film I've seen in a while.

Great performances from Brendan Gleeson and Don Cheadle as well as many little cameo roles from various irish and british actors.

Highly recommended for an hour and a halfs worth of clever and funny entertainment.

8.5 Derringers out of 10 for me.

The Wicker Man - 5/10

Boring and not at all scary, I don't even think it was particularly 'eerie' either. The final scene was good, and Britt Ekland was really fit. I like the original premise and I guess it was a film of it's time, but I thought it was fairly poorly executed and underwhelming.

Holy crap

Fargo - Hugely rated on imdb, finally watched it and didn't enjoy it much tbh. 6/10

Holy crap again.

Watched a couple of olduns today:

This Gun For Hire (1942) - Veronica Lake and Alan Ladd. Atmospheric and just superb. Lake was stunning. Shocking she died so young - 51 I think. Jessica Rabbit's hair was modelled on Lake's. 8.2/10

Marnie (1964) - Classic Hitchcock with Tippe Hedren and Sean Connery. First time I've ever seen this for some reason. Really enjoyed it and Hedren is fantastic in it but I thought it started to get a bit weak towards the end, lost its way a bit after the hunt scene. 7.6/10

The Thing 0/10

Don't know why I keep watching every shite remake just to bitch and moan about the original was better. And Yes I know the Kurt Russell one was technically a remake.

Yeah, I went to see this last night. Not that much to shout about - some of the monsters are OK, but on the whole disappointing. Definite video-fodder.

I just hope the 'Alien' prequel 'Prometheus' isn't a disaster.

50/50 - 8/10

Ides of March -7.5/10

Holy crap

I've had to study the film a lot since writing that, and I have come to appreciate the cultural context a lot more, I guess it was really a film of it's time. I still don't like it though, which probably helps when having to analyse it.

Another one which is supposed to be a profound symblic reflection of the sixties - Blow Up - rubbish. I missed the start, which meant I didn't have much of a grasp on whatever plot existed, so I wont bother rating it. But fuck me, I don't mind slow paced films, but I found it painful to watch at times. Pretentious, boring, shit.
