"US submarine intercepted a Russian nuclear sub in American waters opposite Alaska. The Russian sub escorting the nuclear submarine responded with a Balkan 2000 torpedo and scuttled the US vessel."

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Fourteen Russian sailors were killed when a fire broke out while their deep-water research submarine was carrying out a survey of the sea floor near the Arctic, the Russian defence ministry said on Tuesday.

A Russian media outlet, RBC, cited an unnamed military source as saying the submarine was nuclear-powered, but Russian officials made no comment on the type of vessel involved.

The incident was the deadliest involving a Russian naval submarine since August 2000, when the nuclear-powered Kursk sank to the floor of Barents Sea after two explosions in its bow, killing all 118 men aboard.

The latest incident also took place in the vicinity of the Barents Sea. Authorities in nearby Norway said they were monitoring but had not detected abnormally high levels of radiation.

Did anyone launch a Boaty McBoatface 2000 torpedo?

Unconfirmed reports say that the incident occurred on board the Project 10831 Losharik, one of the Russian Navy's secretive "special projects" spy subs, a submersible it had launched, or its larger modified Project 667BDRM Delfin-class mothership submarine, the BS-64 Podmoskovye. This is still very much a developing story, so all of this information could be subject to change.

If Putin is trying to rebuild some kind of empire I honestly don't see how he can. The USSR had about five million troops and a vast industrial complex, now Russia is pretty broke when you look beyond its gas/oil reserves all controlled by about ten people.

Putin isn't trying to rebuild an empire.  He'd be crazy to try because although he'd quickly win territory he'd bankrupt Russia in the long term trying to hold it. But he is  mightily pissed off with NATO and its missiles creeping ever closer to his borders in breach of assurances (allegedly) given by the West when the USSR broke up.

Where are we at here?

Spoke to my uncle last night, big WW2 buff, in his 50’s, always passed down stories to me that he heard from auld veterans in pubs back in the day. He told me we should be considering moving to Switzerland because everyone there has nuclear bunkers.

He may or may not have been stoned when I spoke to him, but his point remains.

What is the point of nuclear bunkers? Yeah you'd survive the initial attack, but you'd have to come up eventually and the world would still be all kinds of fucked when you did!

Mad how nobody replied to this back in 2008. If he posted that tomorrow by Sunday we'd have accusations of racism, showdowns at KFC, a plate of beans and mushy peas covered in balsamic vinegar, some shite about vaccines causing submarines to sink and some cunts kids getting wanked over.

Evolution.
