Deadwood movie coming from HBO

Emmy-winning show about the Wild West, which starred Ian McShane and Timothy Olyphant, is coming to the big screen

Deadwood, a superb HBO television series about The Wild West that starred Ian McShane and Timothy Olyphant, is being made into a movie.

Deadwood, which ran for three seasons and 36 shows from 2004 to 2007, was nominated for 28 Emmys (winning eight) and earned a Golden Globe in its first two seasons for McShane.

The show, which is set in the 1870s in Deadwood, South Dakota, was created and executive produced by David Milch, who had previously worked on the acclaimed cop show NYPD Blue.

Deadwood was notorious for its filthy mud and filthy script. There are 2,980 F-words alone, at an average of 87.5 per episode.

HBO programming president Michael Lombardo told TVLine that he has personally given Milch the green light to resurrect the show as a film. “David has our commitment that we are going to do it,” said Lombardo. “He pitched what he thought generally the storyline would be — and knowing David, that could change. But it’s going to happen.”

When he was creating the series, Milch said he wanted to explore the “primordial ooze” of law enforcement. In Deadwood, Olyphant's Sheriff Seth Bullock has to try to control McShane's character, the ruthless and foul-mouthed town boss Al Swearengen.

Deadwood also starred John Hawkes as Sol Star, Molly Parker as Alma Garret, Powers Boothe as Cy Tolliver and Robin Weigert as Calamity Jane.

New York Times critic Alessandra Stanley wrote of the show: "This depiction of the West was sophisticated and deeply layered, sometimes comical but always brutal. Fetid, crowded, filthy Deadwood wasn’t just primitive — it was primal. Murdered men were fed to pigs. Sex in the brothels was almost as callous."

"Timing wise, Lombardo says Milch has another project he’s currently working on, “But the understanding is that when he is done with that he will turn his attention to [writing the] script for the Deadwood film.”"

I don't think that's much closer than what was previously said.

HBO are sorting a film for it.

Not heard anythibg for a while be it was confirmed earlier this year

They were due to start filming late this year or early 2017, but it's been put back because Milch is working on 'Shadow Country'. Up until a couple of months ago there wasn't a finished Deadwood script.

The worrying thing is, the mad who gave the movie the greenlight, Michael Lombardo, left HBO in June.

EB: Al, if you're not dead and already mouldering, I send news to revive you. A fish to rival the fabled Leviathan has swum into our waters, get well soon, and we'll land the cocksucker together. I also have the news you dispatched me to secure of the newly arrived cunt.

That is brilliant.

HBO now saying 2019. They have a screenplay now but apparently not shooting yet, if I understand it correctly.
