Goodfellas

This is so wrong.

Goodfellas is a comedy and I didnt even realise it was supposed to be based on a true story as it was so jokingly made.

The Godfather originals were both masterpieces and Casino is a brilliant modern effort that deserves to be mentioned in the category under that in Gangster films but not Goodfellas in my book.

The 2 Mesrine films were even better than Goodfellas by a distance and there are others that I cant think of but will remember when I think on it.

I also think Scarface is a bit overrated but its still much better than Goodfellas. Not forgetting the Sopranos if we include the small screen as well.

Goodfellas is style over substance and I think that role would have been better without Liotta in at at that stage of his career.

I respect your opinion and all, but I think you've misread the film.

Goodfellas doesn't aim for deep characterisation because the people depicted were themselves shallow caricatures, the gangster culture had become a weird parody of itself. Scorsese highlights the absurdity, it was one of the first images of gangsterdom not to be centred on suited dons sitting in leather armchairs but the men in the street, neighbourhood characters who bought into the myth.

It's comical, I'll give you that, but it's intended to be absurd because that's the truth of the situation. Men who'd steal millions and squabble over the price of a drink.

You've got to at least accept the use of music is great?

Outrageous statements from Vlad. Sorry fella

Goodfellas is a brilliant gangster film and the fact it is based on a true story makes it even better for me. Captures the moment brilliantly imo.

Donnie Brasco is a great film too. Depp , Pacino and Madsen are excellent in it.

Guest Numero Veinticinco

I watched it this afternoon. Had a fucking great lunch. All we need now is a good result in the unmentionable sport and it'll be a splendid Sunday.

It's an ace film. Great cast, great script, great direction.

I think its a generation thing. My younger son loves it but I find it a bit too trite considering its subject matter. Like the gangster flicks which are dark but with moments of black humour. Goodfellas just doesnt have that for me as I love the Godfather originals above all others and there are few that even come close. I dont think Goodfellas is even in the same league.

As for Donnie Brasco, could have been great if not for Johnny Depp in the role. Having loved the book, casting Depp in the role was akin to Tom Cruise being 6ft 6 Jack Reacher.

Hahaha.

As I Said, Stiggy, I'm not really one for gangster-type films, although I have seen some. My favourites include Carlito's Way, The Godfather Part II, Bonnie & Clyde and Mean Streets.
