Shaun Wright-Phillips set for Chelsea exit

Shaun Wright-Phillips could find himself surplus to requirements at Chelsea as coach Avram Grant makes plans to reshape his team in January.

The Israeli coach will be handed £60 million by owner Roman Abramovich to bolster his side when the transfer window reopens.

In the cold: Wright-Phillips has fallen down pecking order

Grant will be without four key players in January as Didier Drogba, Michael Essien, Salomon Kalou and Mikel John Obi will all be away on African Nations Cup duty, and he is already lining up potential targets who can act as cover in their month-long absence.

Hamburg's £20m midfielder Rafael van der Vaart is one of the players wanted by Grant. It is thought the club have already met with the Dutchman's agent, Soren Lerby, who is a close friend of Chelsea's technical director Frank Arnesen, to discuss the 24-year-old's availability.

Free-kick specialist Van der Vaart's arrival, however, could spell the end of Wright-Phillips time at Stamford Bridge. The England midfielder has only started one game for Chelsea since Grant replaced Jose Mourinho - the 4-0 Carling Cup success at Hull - but has since fallen out of favour with the new coach.

Wright-Phillips was left out of Chelsea's Champions League squad for their match against Schalke last week and was not even on the bench for the Premier League contest against his former club Manchester City on Saturday.

Sven-Goran Eriksson could prise Wright-Phillips back to Eastlands with a £10m bid, but West Ham and Tottenham are also thought to be alerted to Wright-Phillips' situation.

While a centre-back remains high on Grant's list, the Chelsea coach will also look to bring in another forward as the club will only have Andriy Shevchenko and Claudio Pizarro available in January.

Grant said: "Even if we make changes to our squad in January, we will change no more than five or 10 per cent of the squad, because there is quality enough there.

"We will only do it if we find one or two players that can make us better."

Worth going for if he's available for £10 million?

i would like to see an injection of pace in to the team (only really gerrard with any pace in that side). thought on sunday we were too slow to counter when there were good opportunities. whether wright philips is the answer i don't know but still need some quicker players at times.

He's a decent player but I'm not too sure whether he is a big enough upgrade over Pennant. I think SWP is the better player, but not by enough to warrant the transfer. I agree with the view that a left winger is more of a priority, as is a third top class CB (though Sami did very well against Arsenal - but time is not on his side).

You and me alike, what a totally over rated footballer this kid is. Hyped to death by his dad and other pundits. Never will be good enough for us. Its a sad reflection on those on here who rate him that things ain't what they use to be.

He's not exactly a world-beating talent, but he is probably a better option than Pennant, in that he's quicker, can beat a man more often and does actually score goals now and then, which is always quite handy if you're an attacking player.

Pepe

Carra

Agger

Javi

Xabi

Gerrard

Torres

They are the list of Top Notch players at the club IMHO

If we are going to play 4-3-3 we will be looking for 2 full backs and 2 stikers playing left and right of Torres not wingers as such so you can see why Henry,Richards,Pandev and Heinze are being linked not saying these are the players but they fit the bill

2 in Jan and another 2 in the summer would see us have the team to beat all

the other players at the club would be squad rotation players

well that is my view anyway
